a -- 10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 24, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Letters to the editor p-- Scugog Township dodges the bullet To the Editor: Scugog dodged the bullet in the landfill site showdown. We are immediately relieved and elated particularly we are hap- py for those whose home and livelihood hung in limbo while the process agonized on. What a relief for them, a relief for the whole township. Our elation is tempered with the knowledge that the process was not stopped and a better so- lution to landfilling has not yet been seriously undertaken. Zero Garbage and P.E.S.T. are not going to dissolve because of this seeming victory. The black cloud that has hung over us has greatly aided in opening our eyes to the problems of our ex- panding consumer society. From the start we have realized that we either have to find ways to curb our production of gar- bage or we are going to have a continuing threat of landfill af- ter landfill. During the three- year process which the Cart- wright community was threat- ened we made submission after submission on better ideas for waste reduction and elimina- tion and we will continue to do 80. While we breath easier here in Scugog our friends in White- vale and in Newtonville have a much darker cloud hanging over them. There but for the grace of the IWA go we, and we extend our sincerest sympathy to those communities. We offer them our support in attempting to stop the IWA process and bring about better solutions to the garbage crises than landfills. Scugog has had a near miss, an inoculation that has strengthened the community and brought to our front door the seriousness of the garbage overload that we all must con- tinue to address. William Lishman Zero Garbage/Scugog Received your questionnaire? To the Editor: Recently, in order to establish the need for outreach services to job seekers, an Employment Services' questionnaire was re- cently distributed throughout Scugog. There has been a great response, and we are hoping this will continue. One problem has arisen, how- ever; some hamlets and villages in our township have postal codes which make them appear to be outside Scugog. For exam- ple, Epsom is "R.R. 4, Ux- bridge." As all the mailing was done by postal codes it is prob- able residents of such areas have not received a question- naire. This is a unique opportunity for this community to have di- rect input into the need for, and provision of, government servic- es to rural areas. We need the co-operation of all residents to clearly register that there is a significant need for more ac- cessible services. If any of your readers, resi- dents and taxpayers of Scugog Township, have NOT received a questionnaire, we urge them to visit our office and take advan- tage of this chance to have their opinions and needs included in the survey. Sincerely, Vonne Haigh, Project Manager - ; Please recycle this newspaper Concerning police matters To the Editor: In my recent column "Report from Queen's Park" I decided to speak out on how I perceived the police protest to be not one about "police and public safety," but rather a protest attached to a political agenda. Through tak- ing the chance of speaking out and by not keeping "mum" over the controversy, it has caused several people to write to me, and to the newspapers, saying that I don't understand the po- lice and that I'm "out of touch" with reality, and I should be ashamed of my comments. Having served as a civilian and military police officer, in Canada, in Europe and with the United Nations, and as the com- mander of a Special Investiga- tion Unit, all over a 22-year pe- riod, I believe it fair to say that I do understand policing. I've endured all kinds of rig- orous police training, sometimes almost inhuman. Walked a beat and checked buildings on foot in the dead of winter and the dead of night, been confronted with crazed men wielding guns, knives, baseball bats and army belts, with heavy brass buckles on the end, that cut through the air just inches away from your face. Investigated fatal traffic accidents, and vicious assaults, seen children burnt to death in housefires, while not being able to do a thing about it. And I have been haunted for weeks af- ter with a sadness that can't be described. I've come between armed people bent upon killing one another, in a land where life itself didn't seem that impor- tant. Tried to comfort bereaved parents, while unable to speak their language. Carried a .38 and a .9 m.m. automatic pistol PEST still committed PEST recognizes that the In- terim Waste Authority has cho- sen to leave the five Scugog landfill sites off the short list. In doing this, the IWA has ac- knowledged that these sites are inappropriate according to their own criteria based on agri- culture, land use, transporta- tion, tourism, surface water, and the environmental effects on Lake Scugog and the Kawar- tha Lakes ecosystem that was contained in the briefs submit- ted to the IWA by PEST and ZERO Garbage. We are still on duty with the awesome re- sponsibility that brings. I've been tasked with investigatin crimes involving my peers, | believe me that isn't easy. I've been called everything, been subjected to racist remarks, been punched and kicked and spat on as well, for good meas- ure. And at times I have been frightened too. 'm proud that I can still call police colleagues I served with over 30 years ago, my friends. Men like, 'Staff Inspector Bob Crampton of Metro Police Dept., Sault St. Marie. Police Chief Barry King, Goderich Po- lice Chief Pat King, former Bar- rie City Police Chief Earl Snid- er, former Innisfil Police Chief and now Simcoe County War- den Stewart Fisher, and hun- dreds of other police officers and former police officers. Just because I happen to be a New Democrat MPP doesn't mean I hate the police. I am still of the opinion that for them to disobey their chief's instruc- tions, and for policemen to de- cide themselves whether they should issue tickets or not, is to- tally wrong. There are many people unhappy with the gov- ernment from time to time. That is quite normal, and politi- cians have come to accept this. Nobody, to my knowledge, with the exception of the police, are able to take the law into their own hands to try to effect changes. The democratic way is still through the ballot box - and truthfully, there isn't a bet- ter way despite how fed up you may be. That's the way I see it. Gord Mills, Durham East MPP committed to proper waste management and more exten- sive recycling efforts. However, the IWA has in- formed us that if the short listed sites do not meet the proper cri- teria for a landfill site, the IWA reserves the right to examine the long listed sites again and choose other alternative sites. Due to this fact, all funds that have been collected will be held in trust until such time as the fi- nal site has passed all environ- mental assessments and the ac- tual construction of a landfill site has begun.
