The Interim Waste Authority announced its short list of po- tential landfill sites for Durham Region on Friday, and the five sites in Scugog named on the long list have been taken off the table. There are now only five sites still being considered from the original 17. Four are in the Whitevale area of Pickering and oneisin Newcastle. There was nobody happier than the landowners whose lives were placed in limbo the past six months since learning that their farms were being con- sidered. Merle Heintzman, alandown- er on one of the sites in Black- stock, said she felt a tremen- dous sense of relief when she learned of the news. "I felt like I was floating," she said. "A tremendous load was lifted." Mrs. Heintzman said she was worried that her home, which she purchased more than 25 years ago, would be one of the sites designated. "I was worried that if they were trying to do it according to area, we would be the one in Scugog."" She was also prepared to fight, and had already began to store extra "ammunition" in her battle. She said her home, which is originally the Fergu- son family home, is about to be designated as a heritage home by the Township of Scugog. Once this is done, it would have made the decision to place the dump on the property almost impossible. "I was pretty sure about the heritage designation," she said. Mrs. Heintzman praised the residents of Scugog who were involved in the process and at- tributed the final decision to their hard work. "I knew we had a good case. Cheryl Feasby, whose family farm was one of the three sites in Manchester, said she was "ec- static and really pleased" by the announcement. "I'm not a gambling person, but I never thought all the Scu- gog sites would be off," she said. She feared the selection would come down to a political decision, and therefore Scugog would have remained on the map. "My worry was if it became political the government stood to lose a lot less votes up here," she said, Now that the threat of losing their farms has been removed, she says they can get on with their lives once again. Mrs. Feasby says the announcement came as a particular relief to her children who hope to continue farming theland. "The kids have really been worried. Their lives have been threatened," she said. "Now they have an idea of where they are going to be farming." Although the fight against the landfill sites is over, Mrs. Feasby says the members of Preserve the Environment of Scugog Township (PEST) will continue its goal of reducing garbage "It's over, but we will keep fighting," she vowed. "Hopefully alternatives (to dumps) will be looked at." Mrs. Feasby says a valuable lesson was learned by the IWA process, this being that there is a garbage crisis. But she says there are still many in the town- ship that are still producing too much garbage. "Some people learned about the garbage problem, but we still have along way to go.' John Willms, the lawyer re- tained recently by PEST and Zero Garbage/Scugog, called the announcement "good news" adding "it seems so obvious that none of those parcels of land were suitable." "It would have been a traves- ty to put one on any of those par- cels," he said. Mr. Willms said he will rec- ommend to his clients to put their file in abeyance, but sug- gests that the group maintains thesituation. If there is a bright note to the whole affair, it is the bond that has been created between Cart- wright and Reach. Bill Lish- man, an executive member of Zero Garbage, believes the two communities were brought to- gether to fight a common cause and are better because of it. He says there has been much animosity in the past, but it has been "laid to rest." "The communities have been strengthened. A lot of alliances have been formed."
