{ | { { { 4 10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Real Estate Section - Tuesday, November 24, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Hunters celebrate Special 45th anniversary U.C.W. members - please keep in mind the December meeting will be held on Dec. 2. This is to be a pot luck luncheon at noon. This is the last meeting of the year. Plan to attend and bring your friends. Mrs. Ruby Beare is our convenor and she has great plans for our Christ- mas meeting. Many thanks to Doris Hill for writing this column the last three weeks while I was away visiting. My sister Anne Wills drove us to Hyland, Michigan to help celebrate our Aunt Crystal Barron's 84th birthday. On our return I stayed in Thamesville for a visit with my daughter Dale Ellison and Ken and grandchildren Amy, Lisa and Stephen. My daughter Penny came on Friday and drove me home on Saturday. With all my Christmas shopping I could not come back by train. On Sunday, Carley Marie Margaret McKean was chris- tened in Tyrone United Church by Rev. Bonnie Kelly. Her moth- er Donna was also baptized. Three pairs of grandparents at- tended as well as relatives and friends. The Christmas euchre party will be this Friday, Nov. 27 in Greenbank Hall. Everyone is welcome. The Junior Choir practice will be on Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. sharp! The Hunter family were roy- ally entertained at the home of Jim and Shirley Hunter, on Sunday to help celebrate the "45th" wedding anniversary of their parents Mr. and Mrs. Neil Hunter. Congratulations Jean and Neil from all your friends. Mr. and Mrs. Mel McGee had Sunday dinner with daughter Cathy and Jeff Shepherd in Oshawa. A good crowd attended church on Sunday morning. We enjoyed having Elaine Barber as our minister. She was here on Pulpit Exchange with our minister Rev. David Shepherd who took the services at Scugog Island and Manchester. The ministry in music was a beautiful rendition of "They Shall Soar Like Eagles" by the Parish family. They were ac- companied by Renee Parish on the flute and Linda Hunter on the piano. Church looking a BE OE RE EPROP A ERR RAUR TE for musical kids BP PSB RARE PA -- CR _- Congratulations to the "Grace" U.C.W. in celebrating their 30th anniversary. These ladies represent present and past residents of the centre and foot of the Island who belong to the Scugog Island United Church. The "Head" U.C.W. represents the ladies from the head of the Island. They formed different groups years ago when there were four churches at the head, centre, foot and native church at the foot and women did not travel so easily. A few years ago a group of young enthusiastic ladies at the foot organized a separate U.C.W. They did exceptionally well until members moved away or began getting jobs out- side the home and thus the group weakened and had to give up. Today the younger women have so many outside interests that the load becomes a little heavier for the older ones but they never give up if possible. It 1s interesting to note that past presidents - June Crozier, Dorothy Hood, Elsie Pogue and Barbara Bisschop who have moved from the Island were able to return for this memora- ble occasion. Jane and Ray Reader recent- ly enjoyed a Caribbean cruise when they had a chance to gpend a day on each of five is- lands, enjoying caves, gardens and scenery. One highlight was a trip in a submarine to enjoy many fish and a coral reef for about an hour. They considered they had about nine meals a day and plenty of entertainment. Children of the Island United Church who would be interest- ed in playing some kind of mu- sic as pr gather for service are requested to contact Karen Davis for arrangements. We think of Allen Redman at the head, main road who has suffered for many years with painful knees and finally got re- lief through surgery for one but must be patient before the sec- ond one is suitable for surgery. Even if you try to shut your ears it is difficult not to over- hear conversation in a bus. As | found when two women were discussing bringing up their families, how much they needed in new clothes and shoes, the cost of feeding them and their constant asking for more pocket money. The bus echoed with complaints and grumbles. Until a woman sitting in front turned and spoke: "Teouldn't help hear- ing what you said. I used to be like that. fy boy was a great ex- pense too. We had to sacrifice to give him what he needed." Then she paused as tears came to her eyes. "But then he died. Now he doesn't cost us anything but, Oh, TI would give the world to have him back again." There was a silence that could be felt, but each one of us was thinking our own thoughts. music Sy on Tr Go News rvs Go NN I lll Teme ARR Rea LL Te We were pleased to have a good crowd show up on Friday evening in Utica Hall, filling 13 tables for a game of euchre. There will be another euchre in two weeks, Dec. 4. Church and Sunday School this week will be held in Epsom at 11 a.m. The congregation were pleased this past Sunday to welcome Nell Laird and Al- lan Bertrand as official mem- bers of the congregation during the service at Utica. This coming Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in St. Thomas' Anglican Church in Brooklin there will be a Hymn Sing with the Ep- som-Utica choir taking part as well as Karen Skelding on the flute. It sounds like a very en- tertaining evening and all would be welcome. We wish the best to Murray and Marie Geer who have left our community for their new home in Apple Valley. Their house has been sold to Mr. and Mrs. Frank Coyle who will be moving in soon. Happy birthday to James Ste- venson who celebrated his eighth birthday on Sunday with seven of his friends at a skating party at the Scugog Arena and back to his home for pizza and cake.
