Sen- ior Girls Basketball team won the "AA" DYSSAA champion- ship last night, stopping Brock 40-37 in another pulsating thriller. The game had abso- lutely everything - great shot making by both teams, aggres- sive rebounding and loud, en- thusiastic supporters for each team. The lead changed hands throughout the first half, and at half time we led 20-19. Both teams were in foul trouble in the second half, and Port Perry had all of our forwards with four fouls as we held on to a two point lead. A quick turn over and a fast-break basket by Shawna Cornish with 57 sec- onas lett pushed us to a 40-36 lead, and a desperate attempt by Brock to take a game tying three point shot misfired in the last seconds as we preserved the win. We had 10 players who have played all season long with con- siderable grit and intensity. When we have had troubles this season, they have been at the defensive end. Last night, players like Kylie Kearns, Jen Tingle, Vanessa Gibson and Lori Buscher kept the Brock of- fence off-balance on the perime- ter, while Jodi Komick and Gretchen Cornish took care of business on the defensive board. A special mention has to be Islanders show good scoring punch at home Canadian Tire Islanders showed lots of scoring punch on Wednesday, Nov. 256 at home against Omemee. Scoring for Islanders were Mike Williams, two; Mark Co- sway, two; Chad Garvock, Blair Prechitko, Corey Wilson, Steve Stiles and Lou Whitfield in a 9- 0 rout. Assists to Lou Whitfield, four; Blair Prechitko, two, Mike Sluggett, two; Jason Coutoula- kis, two: and one each to Mark Cosway, Corey Wilson, Mike Staniland and Steve Stiles. Shutout by Kyle Simms. The team seems to be work- ing guite well together and as a result are starting to play solid hockey. This week is a busy one with games against Millbrook, Sunderland and Little Britain in league play. Sunday, Dec. 6 the Isles play in the Bancroft Tournament. Pee Wee As down Uxbridge in easy 8-2 decision The Pee Wee Legion A team met up with Uxbridge on Friday evening at the Scugog Arena and came away with an easy victory of 8-2. The big story of the night was two of our boys picking up hat tricks. Scott Jeffrey and Rob Murphy picked up three goals a piece to lead the way and Rob added one assist. Our other two goals went to Mike Morden and Danny Robin- son, who both counted in the third period. Mike also added in alone assist on Danny's goal. A lot of help came from the rest of the boys in the assist de- partment as these goals were set up by hard work from Danny Lyons (two), Shane Norton (two), Colin Laird (one), Scott Hefferin (two), Seth Gray (one), and Daryl McEnaney (one). Luke Carnaghan handled the duties in net for the entire game and made some great stops, one in particular where his leg was - fortunately long enough for his toe to catch it. Although this appeared to be an easy game, it was great stops in goal that helped keep Ux- bridge off the scoreboard. ft was a good start for our tournament the next morningin Cobourg. On Saturday, the Pee Wee Le- gion team headed out early for Cobourg for our second tourna- ment of the year. We had a great start with a team from Hagers- ville who we managed to handle easily, 7-2. Kent Johnston handled the goaltending duties for this game and if he wasn't wide awake at first, he certainly was within 20 seconds as a big for- ward from Hagersville broke loose and blasted a bullet. Kent left handed this shot and was hot the rest of the game. Two of the boys were headed for hat tricks as Danny Lyons counted two, once in the first and once in the third, and added one assist. Mike Morden put two on the board, the first in the middle of the second and another unas- sisted on a breakaway early in the third. Several boys sot up the goals through the game with ford rushes and a lot of digging out of the corners and from behind the net. L Shane 'Norton picked up two assists, Daryl McEnaney (two), Colin Laird (one), Mike Heas- * man (one), Scott Jeffrey (one), Scott Heffern (two) and Seth Gray (two). | The balance of the goals were notched by Scott Heffern, Rob Murphy, and Adam Jones, with one each. Our next game was one hour later against our nemesis, Co- bourg, who always seem to beat us when it really counts. Port Perry counted first on an unassisted goal by Danny Rob- inson after a scramble around the net. Things looked pretty good un- til the 3:20 mark of the third when Cobourg tied it. Five min- utes later, Shane Norton set up Rob Murphy to put us ahead again. Then 20 seconds into the third, Cobourg tied it up again and added another only two minutes later. Efforts were made to tie it up but penalties seemed to put usin abad spot. Our next game wasn't until 8 p.m. and therefore a meeting was held in the board of direc- tors room at the nearby Best Western Hotel. The meeti was called to order at 2 p.m. an a motion for adjournment by Grant Laird was given at 2:01. We then énjoyed lively conver- sation for the next five hours and peanuts, chips and tortillas accompanied light refresh- ments. It was mutually agreed that tournaments, were for our fun, the heck with the boys. After a minor bus accident, was cleared away, we cautious- ly made our way to the arena to meet Belleville, who wanted this game more than we did.
