4 "A 'Family Tradition for 126 Years" SL AR STR CP er meta Tn, ry no --~ ry Eaglettes extend winning streak The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team took their five game unbeaten record to Brook- lin on Sunday for a rematch against the Whitby No. 1 team and skated away with a con- vincing 9-8 win. With an early 6:30 a.m. Sunday practice still fresh in the girls minds and a few aching muscles, plus the an- ticipation of a tough match against their Whitby rivals. The Eaglettes were well pre- pared for the battle and con- trolled the most part of the game. Once again, it was Stacey Cunningham, our top scorer putting Port on the board with a nice passing play from Kristen Waller and Alaina Davis. Shan- non Warriner, playing forward the last few games and playing with great intensity, scored the second XL goal and her second in as many games on a quick low shot with the assist going to Nicole Virtue. Stacey notched her second of the game to make it 3-0 with the assist again go- ing to Alaina Davis. Nicole, our strong skating center, potted the next two goals with Kristen assisting on the first and Stacey sebiing up Nicole on her second al. The Eaglettes went ahead 6-0 on an unassisted goal by Leanne Layzell who is playing a strong two-way game and prov- ing that she will be ready for the jump up to Petite next year. The Whitby team, with some strong players of their own and evenly matched with Port kept on coming at the XL defense and net, but were stopped time and again by our triangle de- fense and the strong goaltend- ing of Jill Pashley our No. 1 goalie who kicked out save after save. They did manage to score three goals but the total would have been more without Jill to hold the fort. Sarah Verschuuren once again twisted and twirled and piroetted around everyone and put Port ahead 7-1 with Stacey getting the assist. The next two goals were scored by Alaina Davis who played a solid defense in the irst period and when moved up to forward in the second period responded with the two goal ef- fort and her best game of the year. Her second goal a great in- dividual effort around the Whit- by net and a quick backhand in the top right corner. The for- ward wingers of Jackie Pashley, Rhea Baxter, and Alaina Bur- ger skated a strong two-way game and once again came 80 close to scoring and with the ef- forts they made plus a little bit of luck the ring will fortunately bounce their way. The defense of Katherine Cooke, and Heather Reid put a blanket over the Whitby attack and kept them off the ring and out of our end giving Jill the pro- tection she needed. Coaches' summary: very pleased with the super effort from all the players and happy to see that the hard work in practices concentrating on skat- ing skills, ring control, and posi- tional play is making a big dif- ference in the team play. So there was excitement in the air as the powerful Ux- bridge team came to town Fri- day with Port Perry looking to avenge a couple of lopsided pre- season losses to Uxbridge. Pearce Auction carried the play to Uxbridge early in the game but fell behind 2-0, before Trevor Weisflock scored, assist- ed by Michael Milligan with 48 seconds left in the first period to make the score 2-1. Trevor Lance tied the score with assists from Matt Skerratt and Tim Jones before Trevor Weisflock scored his second of the game from Adam Moynes to put Port Perry in front for the first time 3-2. Adam Moynes scored with seven minutes to go in the third period, assisted by Trevor Weis- flock to make the score 4-2. Uxbridge began to press but Thomas Lee and Darty Ste- phens made some fine saves in goal and Tim Jones with Dane Gray along with Scott Duncan and Gerard Timmers kept the Uxbridge forwards off balance in our end. With under two minutes to play the visitors scored to set up an exciting finish. Rather than go into a defensive shell Pearce Auction took the play to Ux- bridge and some hard work by Michael Wiseman and Michael LeFort paid off when Matt Skerratt scored with 44 seconds left in the game to ice a 5-3 Port Perry win. The boys are really playing well as a team and this was a very exciting game to watch. Keep up the good work. Pearce Auction Novice 1 Action - Port Hope The boys ended a long day with a 4-2 victory at Port Hope Tuesday night. Arena clock trouble disrupt- ed the flow of the game but not the Pearce Auction scoring touch. Trevor Lance opened the scoring with a fine effort assist- ed by Matt Skerratt. 'Dean Van Camp then scored unassisted and Trevor Weisflock scored the third Port Perry goal, as- sisted by Michael Milligan. Port Hope applied consistant pressure throughout the game but solid goal tending by Thom- as Lee and Darcy Stephens, aided by good puck clearing by defense pairs Dane Gray/Tim Jones and Gerard Timmers/ Scott Duncan limited Port Hope to two goals. Relays for all age groups are swam in evening finals as well. Overall 16 Onta- rio teams competed with many from large centers such as Otta- wa, Thunder Bay and Oakville. Uxbridge placed eighth with to- tal points of 298. Rel.ay points play a major role over all with double points for tory eight places. All of Ux- bridge's girls placed in the points (total 74) and the boys' senior relays (15 and over) placed in the points as well.
