"SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 1, 1992 - 3 Getting things done with time to spare Want to give yourself a great gift this Christmas? Wouldn't you love to have plenty of time to shop, wrap, party, cook, and even relax? Here's some advice from Karen Quinn, Director of Education for Liz Claiborne Cosmetics, on how to get every- thing done this holiday season - with time to spare! Get it in writing: Start by writing down everything you have to do so you can figure out the most efficient use of your time, rather than wasting it. To make your list, make a section for every day from now until Christmas. Working back from the deadline for each chore, write down what must be done each day. Group similar activities to- gether. For instance, make all your phone calls together, do all your shopping in one trip, etc. Separate out what must be done that day and what can be put off if necessary. You don't need a fancy calendar - a plain piece of paper will be fine. When you've completed something, check it off. It's a great feeling! Get real: Ifthe list you've com- piled seems impossible to ac- complish eliminate something from your list, or, better yet, del- egate chores to family mem- bers. Delegating has the added advantage of bringing the fami- ly together (which, after all, is one of the best aspects of the holiday season). If you try to fit 25 hours of work into a 24 hour day, you're only setting yourself up to fail. The perfect gift: Planning and shopping for gifts is one of the most time consuming holiday projects. To save time deciding what to give people, start think- ing about the big picture. "In- stead of trying to find out what each individual on your list has, needs, or wants, think about something almost everyone needs, and then shop for some- thing that gives it to them," Quinn suggests. "That will save you from wandering around the stores, trying to figure out what the best gift would be for one person at a time." Bite-sized chores: Rather than seeing your holiday tasks as huge projects, break them down into small parts and only think about what you have to do today. According to Quinn, "Too many people become over- whelmed and don't do anything at all. Then they spend the last few days before Christmas in a frantic, stressful and ultimately unsuccessful attempt to get it all done." Just say no! Guard againstin- terruptions. A wonderful sense of flow develops when you can do something without being un- interrupted. When necessary, say "NO!" Put your answering machine on, plan activities for the kids away from the house, close the door. Personal time: Plan two full hours for yourself every day. Take a walk, get a massage, read a book, do anything that has nothing to do with chores. HRISTHAS TREES SUPPORT SCOUTING"S ANNUAL This allows you to make the most productive use of the rest of your day. Which would you' rather do: Spend two hours on yourself and eight hours enjoy- ing crossing tasks off your list, or spend 10 hours in a frantic, inefficient race against the clock? Be flexible: Forget about the old saying "Never put off till to- = 7 i NW) ~ . NJ : RD NS h ». A J = NX N 5 4 2S = N= J "SH " 2s 22 a // 0) > - N =) N pilsh Small to Plus Sizes morrow what you can do today." 'Just because you can do some- thing doesn't mean you should! When you begin to feel tired, stop! You'll enjoy the job and look forward to finishing it the next day if you feel good about it. Feel free to swap planned tasks and days, as long as you keep getting things done. So many people see the holidays as a long series of endless plans, chores and er- rands. They don't relax until Christmas Day. It doesn't have to be that way!
