Under the terms of the agree- ment reached recently, the Ux- bridge Fire Department will re- spond to calls in the western portion of Scugog Township from Medd Road to the Brock Township border and from Re- gional Road 23 to Marsh Hill Road. It does not include the Ham- let of Epsom, however. This will still be the jurisdiction of the Scugog department. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den said this agreement was a logical solution considering the Uxbridge department was clos- er to the area than Scugog. The two departments also reached a number of monetary agreements. Scugog has agreed to pay Uxbridge a retainer fee of $12,000 annually for the years 1992-1994. It also agreed to pay $565 for the first hour and $390 for each additional hour which the Ux- bridge department attend a call, and $22 per hour for each member of the department who attend a fire. Councillor Gadsden says the agreement provides for better coverage of Epsom. Township bylaw would close unimproved roads The Township of Scugog is drafting a bylaw which will es- tablish conditions for fencing off unimproved roads. The bylaw, which was initiat- ed by council on Monday, will designate specific uses for the unimproved roads. Currently there is 96 kilome- tres of unimproved roads in the Man injured in farm accident A 41-year-old Port Perry man suffered severe injuries in a farming accident last week. There has been a re- cent push to close these roads with the hopes of reducing ille- gal dumping and recreational - traffic. The use of gates has been sug- geste but council cannot reach an agreement on the method needed to restrict traffic, or even if the roads should be closed. "I'm totally against closing these roads," said Area Council- lor Harvey Graham. "I feel I have the right to go down them and the township has no right to close them." Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie expressed concern over the expense to close the roads, calling it "a useless expense." It is estimated that it would $800 per gate. But other councillors argued such abylaw is necessary to des- ignate the uses and provide a document with which to police the area. The bylaw should be ready be January. Mayor Hall said he is glad the project is beginning to take shape after a number of years of stops and starts. "I think once it's done, it will be great," he said. Plans for the development call for a number of "Triple A" tenants including A&P, the To- ronto Dominion Bank, Canadi- an Tire and a drugstore chain.
