Bob DeShane, owner of Lind- say and District Ambulance Service, says planned cutbacks to the service which operates out of both Lindsay and Port Perry, have been put on hold un- til management is directed by Dr. Kevin Dunkerley * Dr. Lionel McTague the Ontario government. Nor does he expect any chang- es until the end of the fiscal year on March 31. In August, 1992, the company announced cuts in service in- cluding the elimination of one day vehicle in order to meet its directive of a one-per cent in- crease in its budget outlined by the NDP government. Once a month we "We're in a state of limbo," says Mr. DeShane. "We're still operating at proposed levels." At the forefront of the whole issue is the question of the stat- us of the ambulance officers. The officers were recently certi- fied by the Ontario Public Ser- vice Employees Union (OP- SEU), and now must be declared agents of the crown, as they are no longer under the ju- risdiction Ontario Labor Rela- tions Act. If they receive this declara- tion from the government, they must operate under the same contract as 21 other operators. This would result in further pay increases, Mr. DeShane says. And if the contract is signed, cutbacks will be inevitable, as retroactive pay and increases will have tobe paid out as well. "If the contract is signed, re- ductions to service in the area is going to be drastically more se- vere," he says. In the meantime, while the government deliberates over the direction it will take, the lo- cal ambulance service is being split by the wait. Mr. DeShane says the officers are divided over the value of the union. But whatever the decision, Mr. DeShane is afraid of the outcome, as he knows money will have to be found some- * where to avoid the cuts. "The government will have to come up with ways to find more money."
