1 | "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Happy New Year to all! This reporter took a break last week so there is now quite a list of games to catch up on before and after Christmas! Let's start with before, on Dec. 21, 1992 when Port trav- elled to Whitby for a 9:15 p.m. start. I personally missed out on this game but judging by the commerits of the fans in atten- dance, the penalty minutes on the game sheet and the final score, it was rough and tough, but these teams were fairly evenly matched. Jeremy Geer scored late in the first period to put Port on the scoreboard. Assists went to Daryl Bourgeois and Jay King. Whitby tied it up midway through the second period. The game remained at 1-1 until late in the third period when Whitby managed to slip one more in our net to end the game at 2-1 for them. On Dec. 23, 1992, Lindsay met Port on home ice. Pony club survives Given the well-documented problems of the Eglinton Eques- trian Club, it would be easy to form the impression that the Eglinton Pony Club has also ceased to operate. This is not the case. The Eglinton Branch of The Canadian Pony Club was the predecessor of The Eglinton Equestrian Club, and was locat- ed in the same facility until Dec. 13, 1992, but is a separate or- ganization and was not in- volved in the financial difficul- ties of the uestrian Club, Diana Langmuir, formerly an instructor at the Equestrian Club, has leased an 81-acre, 38 stall facility she is calling "Rals- ton Hill", on the 7th Concession of East Gwillimbury, just south of Mount Albert Sideroad. The Eglinton Pony Club will make its new headquarters there, and will offer the same activities in 1993 as it has since 1934. Pony Club is an international organization to promote riding and horsemanship skills among young people (up to 21 years old). Eglinton is one of 32 branches comprising the Cen- al () Guardian Drugs and this game was no exception. Port started off strong, scoring first. A good shot by Kenton Le- Fort, assisted by Craig Laird and Jason Logan. Lindsay tied it up but Port went ahead once more before period one was over as Jan McCready pumped one in their net unassisted. Period two and three saw Port remain scoreless, however while Lind- say scored three more times to end the game at 4-2 in their fa- Vor. Now on to after Christmas! Sunday, Dec. 27, 1992 Port played the first of their Picker- ing tournament games against Brampton. Unfortunately I was unable to attend this one but Port played well and managed a 2-1 victory. Port's goals were Sore by fom Chambers po ay King with assists goi Tim Fitzpatrick and Kenton Le- Fort. Congratulations to Ian McCready, M.V.P. for this game. Port returned to Pickering on Monday, Dec. 28, 1992 for a 4 p.m. start against the Flamboro had a big challenge ahead of them. They were facing Mark- ham No. 1 (double "A"). Port started out very energet- ically. After seven minutes into the game, Dana Hooker, unas- sisted, scored with her powerful wristshot. Despite the many shots taken, Markham man- aged to score. The girls started the second period off as enthusiastically as * the first. The pressure was on' with the score remaining one all. Shona Moase added to the Guardian's scoreboard with an excellent goal between the op- position's goalie's legs. After a minute, Markham tied the Selects. This team was big but did not provide Port with much eames on; Port won this one easi % 8-0. Bill Zaparanuik was M.V.P. playing an excellent game having a hat trick and one assist by game end. Kenton Le- Fort also tallied a hat trick and Daryl Bourgeois scored the oth- er two goals for Port. Assists went to Kevin Hobbs, three; Jeremy Geer, five; Ian McCready, one; and Mark Brownson, one. Game Three was later Mon- day evening against the Picker- ing Selects. Having two wins under their belts, Port seemed anxious to continue in this mode. Port started strong with two goalsin the first period. Bil- ly "Zap" scored the first assisted by Kenton who then went on to score goal number two assisted by Tim and Jeremy. In period two however, Pick- ering seemed suddenly inspired scoring two goals to tie the game. Daryl Bourgeois slipped one past the Pickering goalie, assisted by Tim and Ian but be- Tweens score which made it 2-2. Two minutes later Laura passed to Janine who made an awesome pass to Heather, who shot the ring very powerfully right into thenet. : During the time remaining both defensive lines played ex- ceptionally - hard and kept Markham frustrated through- out the game. The férwards worked hard also and it payed PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 5,1993 - 29 fore the period could end, Mick- ering tied it up again. What Tension! Port's second goal came in the third period on a great shot by Bill assisted by Chris and Tom Chambers. Fi- nal score: 2-0 for Port Perry. Congratulations to Bill Zapara- nuik, M.V.P. for the second time. One game to go, the Champi- onship. What a game to miss, but I did! It was a real nail-biter - Port Pe versus Oshawa. The first period remained score- less, Port being robbed numer- ous times by their opponents' strong man between the pipes. 'Oshawa jumped ahead 2-0 in riod two. Things began to ook bleak for Port. Finally Da- ryl outsmarted the Oshawa assisted by Jay King. The score remained at 2-1 for Oshawa un- off when Janine Haimond~ til at 1:57 of the third period scored to top off the game with a great goal which made the score 4-2 for The Port Perry Guardi- ans. The team worked together and played the best game of the year. : ' : . N ROOT] Q 1] © . gL 15s Adah UR oi [VEEN L140.
