"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Plans in the works for airport modernization By Scott Anderson + Port Perry Star Plans for modernization at Oshawa Airport are taking off, say municipal and federal offi- cials, : Oshawa Mayor Nancy Dia- ~ mond says the project, which has been in the planning stages for almost a year, calls for run- way modernization, improved navigational aids, alternative runway facilities, and improved ground facilities. An Oshawa delegation, head- ed by Mayor Diamond, made a formal presentation in Ottawa to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance' Minister Don Mazan- kowskiin early December. With hat in hand, the delega- tion laid out plans for the mul i- million dollar expansion, as well-as a proposal for cost- sharing. . . The airport, located in north Oshawa, is owned by the federal government and leased by the City of Oshawa. - Mayor Diamond says the need for the modernization was discussed in January, 1992 dur- ing a meeting of regional offi- cials concerning the threat of a G.M. closure in Oshawa after the company announced mas- sive cuts in an effort to increase competitiveness. "During that meeting the mayors focused on how they can help General Motors," she said. "Obviously when we help Gen- eral Motors, we help other com- panies as well." The plans for the moderniza- tion is the next phase of a com- prehensive report drafted in 1987. The Delcan report identi- fied the necessity of moderniz- ing the airport in respect to safe- ty, noise, pollution, infrastruc- tureand facilities. Mayor Diamond says many of the issues have been addressed and this latest plan is nothing more than "moving through the pages of the Delcan Felon . Fhe latest phase will modern- ize the runway to diminish noise pollution, improve the navigational aids for increased safety, provide alternative run- way facilities to avoid densely: populated areas and improve the ground facilities, includin a new terminal at the north en of the airport. Mr. Stevenson says the plans will aid the region as industry has been hesitant about moving into the area, citing the lack of transportation facilities. Mr. Low says the auto manu- facturer does not like to depend on air transportation for its shipping due to the high costs involved, opting instead for the cheaper ground transportation alternatives. Only in emergen- cy situations involving extreme- ly urgent shipments would they depend on air transportation. ut Mr. Low says the compa- ny is "generally supportive" of the project to improve instru- mentation and runway length, as it will aid in the deliveries when the company utilizes the airport. t incidents unrelated, police say Recent incidents in which women have been harrassed in the Port Perry area are unrelat- ed, police say. According to Sergeant Ken Hudson, two incidents involv- ing advances to women have been reported in the past few weeks. The first incident occurred during a blizzard on December 11. A woman was walking along Bigelow Street around 8:30 p.m. when a man approached her from behind wearing dark cloth- ing and abalaclava. He grabbed her shoulder but was scared off when two snow- mobilers passed by at the time of the incident. The attacker ran towards Simcoe Street. Police have no suspects.
