Now he is taking the law into his own hands and distributing his own brand of justice. It's not that he has become a rebel, in fact it's quite the oppo- site, . 'After 20 years as a lawyer in Toronto, he was appointed to the position of Justice for the Ontario Court of Justice, Gener- al Division in August. ; For Justice Fe#guson, the move was a logical step. "It's a natural progression for alitigation lawyer," said Justice Ferguson."I think it's mainly a changein career." But what attracted him to the new role was the ability in the position to change things and have an affect on society. "You're given the opportunity to shape society," he says. "It's your chance to do what you- thinkis fair." Although he is not the young- est person to be appointed to the position, at the age of 47 Justice Ferguson is still considered young. But age should'not prove to be a problem. . According to Justice Fergu- son, the trend is towards young- er appointments. This, he says, will prove to be a valuable mix in the courts. "It's a good balance," he says. "If nothing else you bring to the bench an appreciation of cur- rentevents." But it is an individual's expe- rience and knowledge that each justice will benefit from the most.
