By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star - With the ice fishing season : well underway on Lake Scugog, indications are it is a successful season so far for anglers. Several anglers reported fish- ing is t this year. Anglers near Hone y's Beach report the erch are plentiful, and say they - ave also seen a fair amount of pickerel. There have not been any ma- jor problems with ice fishing yet this season, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Natural Resources. : The Ministry has conserva- tion officers on the ice periodi- cally enforcing the rules and regulationsofice fishing. "There have been a few prob- lems with anglers, like every year, but nothing serious," said David Bell, biologist with the MNR The biggest problem during this ice fishing season, he says, is confusion over the new Out- doors Card, which came into ef- fecton January 1,1993. "Many anglers either do not have their card yet, or do not un- derstand the way it works," he said. "The main job we have been performing on the ice this sea- son has been educating the fish- ermen about the new card," he added. Although the Ministry con- ducted a full creel (angler sur- vey) on the lake last season there is not one in the works in + 1993. The complete creel is per- formed every four years. Although the conservation of- ficers will ask questions, "itwas § much more intense last year," Mr. Bell said. Because of the walleye har- vest problems and ongoing de- - bates over the future of ice fish- ing on Lake Scugog, many anglers are reporting their fish- ing activities to the Ministry on their own. Due to a number of angler's requests, Mr. Bell said the MNR supplied local bait and tackle shops with forms for fisherman who 'wish to let the Ministry know how many fish they Port Perry - 985-9009 PILL 1A lL INS 12 pieces of 5 wb golden fried chicken. The Ministry will be releas- ing its recommendations on its solutions to reducing the wall- eye harvest on Lake Scugog in the near future. "It will be complete in a couple of weeks. From there we will see what happens," Mr. Bell told the Star: The MNR's recommendations will be forwarded to all anglers and interested parties who re- quested a copy of the informa- tion when it was completed. - KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Lake Scugog Is once again dotted with huts as residents and visitors enjoy ice fishing.
