"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 26, 1993 -28 No opposition to Country Market at public meeting to re-zone land It appears opposition to a country market on Highway 7A in Port Perry is waning. Although more ee 25 peo- ple attended a public meeting on Monday concerning a re- zoning application for the mar- ket,-not one person expressed opposition during the meeting. or did the township receive any written opposition, said clerk Earl Cuddie. The pwners of the property, who lease the site to the market operators, were seeking a re- zoning of the land to include a country market and the use be defined in the bylaw. The matter was heard during the public meeting on Monday. The issue of Es Port Perry Country Market, which has been operating for more than six months, has been a conten- tious issue in the past. Some downtown merchants have op- posed the weekend od the ex. claiming it contravened the ex- isting uses specified in the by- law. The market was met with strong opposition when it Council rejects lease extension From Page 2 more money or. throwing more money in until this matteris ad- dressed," she said. "Quite frank- ly,I think we'd be crazy toinvest anymore money until we know whereit's going." The question of whether the present site in north Port Perry was an ideal location has been a thorny issue for quite some time and was raised again on Mon- day by Mayor Howard Hall. He one whether amore suit- able location existed in the area to allow for residential expan- sion on the fairgrounds. Mayor Hall suggested future expansion -and funding should not be considered if the future of the fair at that site was in ques- tion. "Serious consideration must be made concerning another lo- cation," he said. Mayor Hall called for an "in- formal meeting" next month to discuss the future of the fair. Hot diggity dog!! An interest in street vending, particularly food ollie, has" . forced Scugog council to in- crease the number of vendor li-. ~ vendingcartatt cences, i: A township bylaw currently limits the number of licences for hot dog carts in the area to two, but increased applications for the licences force council to in- crease the number to six. The most recent proposal came from Jarrett Harman who is proposing to operate a hot dog e Olco gas sta- tion at thé corner of Scugog Street and Wilbur Road. Council granted the applica- tion, but decided to cap the num- ber of licences in the area to six. Council turns down Health Dept. no smoking bylaw It appears Scugog Council will reject a request by Dur- ham's Health Department to adopt a comprehensive no smokingbylaw. The regional department was hoping to convince Scugog Council to adopt its detailed by- law which outlines various reg- ulations for smoking in public places. . Sandy Schmidt, a Durham Region Public Health nurse, presented the bylaw to Scugog councillors on Monday an called for the township to adopt the document. But councillors took excep- tion to the bylaw arguing that it was too encompassing and in- fringed too heavily on the rights of both the public and the pro- prietors. Council voted to table the re- port for information. Mayor Howard Hall says the township will continue to en- force its present bylaw concern- ing smoking in public places. = EUROPE FUNDRAISER ® The 1st Port Perry Scouts are now offering DOOR-TO-DOOR DELIVERY SERVICE for your flyers, catalogues, magazines, etc. Take advantage of our one day delivery service.
