Between e township's two | halls in Port Perry and Caesar- ea, firefighters responded to 264 emergencies, down from the 288 calls in 1991. Even though. the 1992 calls were down from the previous year, the last two years have seen a drastic in- crease in the number of emer- gency responses. The depart- ~ mentresponded toless than 200 ~ emergency callsin 1990. The 1992 calls for both halls were as follows. There were 21 structural fires, 45 calls to mo- "tor vehicle accidents, 24 chim- ney fires, 15 truck and car fires + 3 oo. 30 grass, brush or bush ~ fires. Compared to 1991, the num- ber of responses to these types of "emergencies were all down, with the exception of chimne fires and motor vehicle acci- dents. While structural fires dropped slightly from 24 calls in : 1991 to 21 in 1992, car and truck fires were down by 16 and there were 31 less grass, brush or bush fires in 1992 than the : previous year. There were also 32 calls of fire alarms being activated and 13 false alarms in the past year. - Cash & tapedeck stolen Port Perry's Open Air Ice Palace had barely opened last week when thieves broke-in and made off with a tapedeck, a small amount of money and . some food. Organizer Elgin Knopp informed the Star that some- time between closing Sunday night and 8 a.m. on January 18, thieves pried open the back door and made off with the goods. = Mr. Knopp said it was a dis- appointing end to a very suc- cessful opening weekend which included an official opening and large crowds using the ice skating facility. ' Mr. Knopp said the TEC sin- gle cassette tapedeck was from Ice Palace building loaned. to the Ice Palace by Irwin Smith, but they would now have to replace it.
