"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 26, 1993 - 39 Virginia Burt of Port Perry recently qualified for the National Telemark Ski Team. She began skiing at two-years-old and rac- ing at age five, and has since compiled an impressive list of ski- ing credentials. Please see story for more details. Burt also earned her Tele- mark Instructor Certificate from the Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors in 1992. As an alpine skier earlier in her career, Burt also boasts an impressive list of credentials having participated in the Nan- cy Greene League and Alpine Team League. After only one year of league racing she was eligible for the Southern Ontario Division Rac- ing Program, where she raced for three years. Burt also worked as the ski is- chool director at the Skyloft Ski Club School for two seasons. She was also the captain of the University of Guelph Ski Team for two years. She has her Level II Canadi- an Ski Instructors Alliance cer- tificate and a Level I from the Canadian Ski Coaches Federa- tion. Although sanctioned by the Canadian Ski Association, Tele- mark skiers recieve no funding. Burt has to finance her skiing. With the help of sponsors such as Champions Fitness Centres, Skyloft Ski Club, Bolle Eyewear, Merrell Telemark Boots, Atomic Skiis, Le Grip, Voile Releaseable Bindings and as well as individuals such as Mario Alias, Pat and Mike Hen- ning and her parents Diane and Larry Burt, she has been able to compete in competitions. She has already won the first race in the Ontario Series this year. The race was held at North York Ski Centre on Janu- ary 12. The second race in the series is today (January 26). When Burt's racing series cul- minates at the Ontario Champi- onships on February 13 she will be travelling around the world todifferent competitions. From Febraury 23-28 she will be in Colorado for the U.S. Tele- mark Championships. She will compete in the Eastern U.S. Championships in Sugarbush, Vermont on March 6 and 7. Upon returning home she will then head to the Canadian Championships at the Osler Bluff Ski Club in Collingwood on March 13 and 14, and from March 28-April 14 she will be in Italy competing in the World Telemark Championships. "I have always wanted to rep- resent my country in some sport. Now that I am I want to put together my best perfor- mance possible at the World Championships," Burt said. In Game One is was Emmer- son Insurance coming out with an upset of sorts as they defeat- ed Monsma Electric by a 3-1 tal- ly. Emmerson totalled two in the opening frame as they struck early at the 2:31 mark with the first one. This came off the broom of Roy Tate from Mike Jones. They built up the two goal lead when James Hud- gins scored his first of two from John Gerber and Len Gagnon. Monsma pulled within one midway through the second when Bill Down assisted on brother Chester's goal. Press- sing late in the game to get the equalizer Brooklin pulled their goaltender only to have Hud- gins end it with his second with help from Gagnon and Karl Wittmer. Blackstock remained atop the standings as they blanked Woody's 3-0. There was no scor- ing in this one until late in the first when Kevin Grieve banked in a shot from Dave Dalton. With the power play on, Scott MacLennan from Ron Redman made it 2-0 prior to the end of the period.
