ak hess TTY LY AANS RY 40 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 26, 1993 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Snowboarding! Not a new sport, but one that has literally taken-off this winter as the conversion from skateboards to snow- boards gains in popularity, Snowboarding is the new rage this winter, with many. of the ski slopes around southern Ontario dotted by agile teens swooping and glid- ing along trails formerly the exclusive domain of the alpine skier. At Lakeridge, snowboarders also have use of special run made exclusively for the sport. It's called a halfpipe and snowboarders can prac- tice their skills swooping from one wall to the other and jumping high into the air to perform a series of skillful maneuvers, The halfpipe, for those unfa- miliar with the term, is like a large snow-covered pipe cut in half along its length with walls up to 12' high along the entire length. But like downhill skiing, snowboarding can be an expensive sport. On the low-end, it costs upwards to $600 tobe equipped, which includes a 'board at about $350 and the necessary boots, bindings and protective padding, which is recommended. Snowboarding offers three distinct styles in which to compete. There's slalom rac- ing, freestyle and alpine. They also come in a variety of shapes and styles ranging from 120 to 170 centimeters in length. While some alpine skiers are unhappy about snow- boarders invading their ter- rain, complaining they're ruining the slopes, one instructor at Lakeridge told the Star he didn't feel they did any more damage to the slopes than the skiers. It appears snowboarding is here to stay, and it is inevi- table the Ski Resorts, will do all they can to encourage the young people to their facilities. Photos by J.
