"A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Techstars come out on the wrong side of the scoreboard The Port Perry Bantam Ils joined us with the Midget IIs in righton on the weekend and both teams came out on the wrong end of the scoreboard in their first game. The Techstars played their first game against estown and were never quite fast enough to get first to the puck. Matt Hobbs scored our only goal with 36 seconds left in the ame. Assists went to Brad orton and Kent Taylor. Jamie Trick was between the pipes and faced a lot of tough shots by the Ernestown squad. The final score in the game was 65-1. The team had a much better game when they faced the home team from Brighton. Jeff Jamie- son scored our first goal half way into the first period with the assists coming from Matt Phillips and Trevor Smith. Brighton tied the game up in the second period but minutes later Jeff Jamieson scored our only other goal of the game with Kent Taylor giving him the pass. Unfortunately, Brighton tied the game and forced us into anovertime situation. . Both teams started with four out players and the "Stars" goal- tender Dylan Ferguson had layed throughout the game so he was up for the task. Howev- er, it didn't take lone before Brighton was able to slip in the winning goal between the post and Dylan's hip. The team is now going into their round robin playoffs with Lindsay and Uxbridge starting next Saturday. Although organized in Whit- by, players from across Durham Region are invited to join the league. Several Scugog Town- ship residents are already mem- bers of the growing league. Over the past five years the club has seen a phenomenal in- crease in registration. Forty players were registered five years ago, but more than 800 were involved in the minor level last year. The Whitby league won three provincial championships in 1990, and four each in 1991 and 1992. Lacrosse is said to be the best gport for improving hand-eye co-ordination while improving conditioning and discipline at both physical and mental levels. Lacrosse season ends when hockey season begins, allowing players to be conditioned when they hit theice. Several National Hockey League players attribute their success in hockey to the condi- tioning and training offered from lacrosse. Joe Nieuwendyk and Gary Roberts both played in the Whitby lacrosse league and other players such as Wayne Gretzky, Brian Bellows, Gerry Cheevers, John Ferguson and Dave Andreychuk all played in other organized la- crosse leagues. Registration for Whitby Mi- nor Lacrosse Association will be held February 12 and 13, March 5,6,12,13,26 and 27. Fees for registration are $35 for paperweights and $70 for all other divisions. Those interested are remind- ed to register early as the execu- tive is expecting up to 1,000 players in the Whitby league this year. For more information contact Peter Bird at 432-2322. After giving up an early goal to Oak Ridges, the Isles came back to tie the score 1-1 on a goal by Mark Cosway with an assist to Mike Staniland. Thirty seconds later Lou Whitfield lit the light with assists to Jeff Vernon and Corey Wilson. The first period ended 2-1 for the sles. In the second the Isles kept "the pressure on and took a 3-1 lead on Mike Sluggett's goals with assists to Lou Whitfield and Corey Wilson. Then at the 5:67 mark, Mike Williams scored with an assist to Mark Cosway to take a 4-1 lead. Things looked like they would PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 26, 1993 - 41 The Cartwright Dynos snowmobile club held a drive in brunch at the Purple Hill Loyal red above, Al Argue serves up breakfast to Lorne go the Isles' way until the boys had a lapse of hockey skills and allowed three goals by Oak Ridges, in a 34 second span to tie the score 4-4 at the end of two periods. A long shot from centre ice found the mark for Oak Ridges to make the score 5-4 early in the third. The Isles couldn't muster any attack and allowed two more goals to lose 7-4. ~ Game Two was against home town Brighton. By the mid-way point of the second period, the Isles were down 2-0 when Mark Cosway feathered a pass up the middle to Andrew Pereman who let a bullet go from the blue line to score. The second period end- ed 2-1 for Brighton. | At 7:08 of the third period, Mark Cosway blocked a clear- Canadian Tire Midget action ing pass, then spotted Jeff Ver- non open who in turn passed to Chad Garvock, who scored to tie things up at 2-2. It looked like the Isles might take the lead when Mark Cosway broke in alone only to be denied by a large rut on the edge of the crease which took the feet from under him without a shot. Mo- ments later Brighton scored and took a 3-2 win. In the first game the Isles were dealt a blow when Mike Pashley broke his collarbone and will be lost to the time prob- ably for the rest of the season. Get well soon, Mike! Emiel's win tournament Emiel's Restaurant Peewee house league team returned home victorious from the Vau- ghan City tournament on Sat- urday, Jan. 23. The team cap- tured the "C" division championship over some very good competition from the area. The first game positioned the team against a powerhouse team from Woodbridge. Wood- bridge opened the scoring at 1:39 of the first, with Emiel's bouncing back with a goal by Tyler Wotton at 7:26 of the same period. Both teams were held scoreless until 9:22 of the second, when Woodbridge took advantage of the shorthanded Port team to net three quick goals. By this point the lack of playing time for Emiel's began to show as the team lacked the drive and intensity needed to bounce back. By the end of the match, the Woodbridge team finished with a total of six goals to Port's lone tally. The only bright star on the Port team was Cory Branton in net, who repeatedly turned back Wood- bridge attackers, and he collect- ed a well-deserved MVP for the game. This first loss brought Emiel's up against a team from Newcastle next, and the game turned out to be the turn around point for the team. Dur- ing the first period Newcastle went ahead with two goals, and Port was held scoreless. Going into the second Emiel's started to regain their legs, and the flow of the game slowly began to turn. At 7:33 Tyler Wotton con- nected on a pass from Josh Mar- tyn to record Port's first goal and Tyler's second of the tour- ney. This really brought the team to life, and Port began to pour on the pressure. With the third period nearing an end, and the team still behind b one, coach Wayne Hancoc made some tactical line chang- es, bringing Kevin Edwards up from defense to the forward line for added scoring punch. This move resulted in a goal by Ke- vin, with assists to Josh Martyn and Jonathan Reed to tie the game and send it into overtime. With the goalies pulled, the team could no longer rely on Cory Branton to hold them into the game. Before the clock hit the second minute of play, Tyl- er Wotton again struck (assists to Blayne Kinnunen and Jona- than Reed) for his second goal and the game winner. Tyler Wotton came off the most valu- able player award for the game, and the team had a renewed sense of vitality. The third game was the fhaipicaship match, pitting Emiel's up against the focal Ma- ple team. Maple opened the scoring in the first, but Port bounced right back with two unanswered goals in the open- ing frame. The first was by Jon- athan Reed, set up by Josh Martyn. The second was a flip of the first, with Martyn net- ting the goal and Reed picking up the lone assist. In the second period Maple took some of the play away from Emiel's and pocketed two goals with no re- ply from the Port team. Down by one goal, Emiel's went into the third knowing that they had to come through now. Early in the period, Blayne Kinnunen came in from his defensive posi- tion to score the game tying goal, with assists by Josh Mar- tyn and Kevin Edwards. Again coach Hancock switched his lines, moving Edwards up for added scoring threat. Port in- creased the pressure, and with less than four minutes in the game, Tyler Wotton scored what eventually proved to be the game winner. The Maple team showed tremendous de- termination, and during the fi- nal two minutes the Port team was swarmed by the opposition. However, Branton in net was all that Emiel's needed to clinch the game and win the champi- onship. Josh Martyn won the MVP for his efforts im the game. As for coach Wayne Hancock, he was greeted by an early shower by the team for his out- standing job behind the bench. | | | | | is | | | | | oo | | | | | | | © | | | { | | { | g | { |
