While Mr. Doucette admits to battles of wanting to live and die, he said alot of people he met at the rehabilitation centre were an inspiration to him. "I saw others who were in wheelchairs, paraplegics and quadraplegics. They inspired me, It takes a lot of guts to live and enjoy yourself again," he said, adding, "I decided I want- ed to doit, I decided to try it and Igot better." Through physiotherapy and occupational therapy, Mr. Dou- cette is learning to cope with what happened to him. "It was a traumatic experi- ence. It was violent and it is hard to deal with. It is psycho- logically devastating," he said. e is still frequently remind- ed of the accident through nightmares, and said he has un- dergone sleep therapy for them. ile in the rehabilitation centre he had insomnia for a few months and suffered from fre- quent panic attacks. "It scared me. There were all kinds of things running through my head," Mr. Doucette said. As a former avid snowmobiler and skydiver he said it is a chal- lenge to get out into the world. He never thought of dying when he was skydiving, but now he won't do it again, he doesn't want to take any chances. Although he will be having surgery again soon and will on track have surgery on his leg next year, he said he will probably only lose one finger. "I am fortunate that is it," he said. "Now I want to get back to a family life, and settle in again. I haven't totally looked at myself, but I will acceptitsoon enough." His family's future is at a standstill right now. He said he i8 fighting Workman's Compen- sation and will be in court soon. It is tough right now, no one is releasing any information, he S213. . Doucette just wants to have a stable life with the fami- ly he credits for pulling him through. "If I was single I never would havemadeit," he says. The Doucettes have always been a close-knit family, par- ents, brothers and sisters, who Mr. Doucette says are now a lit- tle overprotective. "My accident) really tore them apart. My dad is my best friend. We are all very close. They are a great family." Mr. Doucette is fighting ~ through what he says has been the biggest challenge of his life. Although he says he may be a little bitter with Raglan Indus- tries over the accident, he feels badly for them too. "It happened, it's over. I am getting better and I must carry on and start over.
