"A Fanilly Tradnige 10h 126 Years? © nrora aN [a Fo Bo) POAT PERRY STAR: YubSday, Febriiafy 3, 1899 £1 Letter to the editor AIDS is a societal To the Editor: I read with great concern in last weeks "misguided and mis- informed" letter from AIDS Durham that perhaps it is in- deed the writer who is misin- formed. I too believe AIDS is a societal problem that must be dealt with y everyone, but with the whole truth not just some of it. AIDS education and information is crucial but it is also very short. The disease is terminal, and there is no cure....The numbers infected are rapidly increasing (according to Health and Wel- fare Canada) and those dying are still 80 per cent homosexual male. (Info. reluctantly di- vulged from AIDS Durham). The transferance of the disease primarily sexual, and into the heterosexual community through the bisexual and nee- dle usage. "Limited government fund- ing" has and continues to be ex- tremely generous according to the financial report of "AIDS Committee of Toronto" $1,288,398 from various grants last year. Get stories straight To the Editor: In response to the fund rais- ing efforts recently in our area by the AIDS Committee of Dur- ham, I find it very disturbing that there is inconsistancy as to "why" funds were being solicit- ed. Talking with neighbors and then finally with AIDS Durham in Oshawa, I got totally differ- ent responses. I was told the The taxpayer is more than generously contributing to the aid and support of a problem that is still largely rooted in 3-5 per cent of our population. The homosexual lifestyle is danger- ous, deadly, and morally wrong, and "that" is not being men- tioned at all. My heart goes out to the in- fected and their families as it would to anyone in pain and suf- fering, no parent should have to experience the grief and pain of outliving a child. (The average lifespan for the homosexual is 42-60 years of age). The fact still remains howev- er that this lifestyle is a "choice," for no scientific re- search or study anywhere, has been able to prove otherwise, - and "successful" help and sup- port is available if you look, and ook in the right places. Instead of getting the "whole" truth, we're getting a "political- ly correct" pallitable package that is more comfortable to live with and that eases the con- science of masses for not taking a stand...As Mr. Briley wrote on money was to help them get into the schools, my neighbor was told it was funds for research, and lastly it was for general ex- penses like office operation. I think perhaps this "well or- ganized" group (letter to the ed- itor by Judy Tobin) had better get their stories straight....and all their facts in order... K.Diceman, Port Perry. problem Jan. 6/93 "We have allowed this to happen." The writer stated with pride that with the Human Rights Code on their side they are non-discriminatory, howev- erifyou don't agree with the lib- eral pro-gsex attitude, and con- done the homosexual lifestyle you're not allowed to volunteer at AIDS Durham. It is a well organized and funded front for the re- educating of a homophobic soci- ety with the goal of cultivating attitudes of acceptability for this deadly lifestyle, through very subtle by effective means. I charge that the heterophobic at- titudes would be closer to the root problem. Iwill fully support any educa- tional endeavor that gives all the facts so a person is able to make well informed decisions, but definitely not any that with- holds the truth! Marlene Scott, Port Perry P.S. One in three in our subdivi- sion does not support this fund- raising event.
