14 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 2, 1993 New plaza will feature large automotive, drug and grocery retailers (From page 1) rybody is really gung-ho to get things going." The 956,000-square foot retail development will feature- a number of triple A tenants in- cluding a 28,300-sq. ft. A&P gro- cery store, a 6,000-sq. ft. bank, a 10,000-sq. ft. drug store and a major retail or automotive store approximately 25,000-sq. ft. in size. Mr. Smith says a number of local merchants have also ex- pressed interest in occupying the remaining units. Also featured on the 10-acre site are two blocks of condomin- lums featuring one, two and three bedrooms units, as well as penthouses. The units will range in size from 1,050 sq. ft. to 1,400 sq. ft., with the eight penthouse units at 2,600 sq. ft. These range in price from $120,000 to 160,000, but no price has been established for the penthouses. Mr. Smith says the condomin- ium units, which will be situat- ed behind the plaza, will be an extension of the waterfront and serve as a link with the existing waterfront development. It will feature a boardwalk, dock, beach and gazebo. Interest in the units has in- creased since signs were erected two weeks ago, he said. A fair amount of the inquiries have come from older, established couples "who like the idea of liv- ingthere." "Interest is building since the signs went up," he said. "People are realizing we're going ahead with this." Once completed, he is confi- dent the development will be a major focal point for the area, drawing people to the communi- ty. "It's going to mean people will make a special trip into Port Perry to take advantage of it," Mr. Smith said. The developers believe the lo- cal economy will benefit from the project. It is estimated that the construction, which will em- ploy a large number of local con- tractors, will create 150 man years of labor. When completed the plaza will employ 132 full- time jobs and 130 part-time jobs. end All at Guaranteed Low Prices UNITED CARPET. The agricultural society requires a lease of at least 10 years in order to be eligible for various Ontario government grants. The board has established a special projects committee to put together a long-range plan showing the direction the board intends on taking with the fair- grounds in the future. The plan will be presented to Scugog Township Council on Tuesday, Feb. 16. "I don't think the future of the fairgrounds is nearly so immi- nent as some councillors would like to think," Dr. Cohoon says. He said the idea the land could be used for housing is pre- . mature, adding that the town- ship's sewers and other services are incapable of handling any additional residential develop- ment. pi * est In e bUuSIness Includes 4 litres of Premium Mopar Engine Oil and a Mopar Oil Filter Engine Tune-up Includes: installation of new Autopar spark plugs * check plug wires, distributor cap and rotor (where applicable), coil, PCV Mid-Winter Inspection Inspect and report on: battery and charging system - antifreeze protection - fluid levels * wiper blades + headlights and bulbs tires, shocks/struts and exhaust valve, belts, hoses, compression, air filter and battery adjust timing and idle (N/A on fuel-injected vehicles). 4 cyl." *Similar prices on other engines. CUSTOMER CARE Dr. Cohoon says the fair- grounds is zoned parkland and estimates it is 60-70 per cent of the parkland in Scugog Town- ship. He says fair board mem- bers volunteer their time to maintain the land which is open free of charge to the public year round, except during events with a gate. He questioned how the town- ship could maintain the land more cost effectively. The board plans on moving ahead with many projects this year, including expanding the display areas, adding a second baseball diamond, and building additional washroom facilities. Dr. Cohoon says the agricul- tural society had a financially successful year, taking in just over $126,000. "We do business very well," he said, adding, "the other side of that is we returned $115,000 to the community (in prize money, plat hiased services, supplies, etc.)." An election of officers was held during the annual meet- ing. The executive remained un- changed with Bill Cohoon elect- _ ed president, Paul Christie 1st vice-president, Gerry Black- burn 2nd vice-president, Penny Pettypiece ladies division presi- dent, and Keith' Phoenix past president.
