R. H. Comish Public Schoo! student Adrienne Trotter en- joyed a "fun day" for elementary school curlers at the Port Perry Curling Club on Saturday. See story for details. Fun day for curlers Students Ivory Forest Belles win 17-4 In the first game of their league playoffs, the Ivory Forest les butted up against the Markham Debs at Clatworthy Arena in Markham. During the first five minutes of the game, Markham popped in two fast goals and it appeared as though Port might have been in for a tough game. However, at the 6:57 mark of the first period Kim Pop- leton passed the ring over to ren Kett who deftly slipped in Port's first goal. Seconds later Val Payne grabbed a pass from Leea Kinnunen and fired in goal number two. From that point on Port Perry went on a scor- ing tear and never looked back. Port controlled the ice and seemed to score at will. Throughout the game Port totalled 17 goals with the last goal being scored by Kar- en Kett at 0:10 with Port Perry sporting six skaters while Tracy Pelow enjoyed the action from the bench. Megan Marlowe assisted on this final effort. Port's scoring was evenly spread throughout the two periods; eight in the first, nine in the second. Karen Kett totalled six goals and Amy Parliament racked up five. Val Payne funnelled in three markers with Megan Marlowe sliding in two. Jen Smith shrugged off her frus- tration to fire in a well placed shot in the second period. Kim Poppleton led the way with assists totalling four, followed by Jen Smith, Tan- ya Towns and Amy Parlia- ment with three a piece. Leea Kinnunen was awarded two assists with singles going to Michelle Fitzpatrick, Megan Marlowe and Karen Kett. Port Perry played well to- gether, picking up their pass- es and making the most of their shots on net to ace their first playoff game. Tracy Pe- low was sharp between the pipes and the Belles won a very decisive game with a score of 17-4. from numerous Perry Corhing Club Saturday Durham Region elementary forafundayo schools converged on the Port curling. "At this level, there isn't a lot of competitions, so it gives the students some game experi- ence," Reg Philip, co-ordinator of the R. H. Cornish Public School curling program, told the Star. "This gives the kids a chance to meet curlers from other schools and gives them a chance to play competitively before they go to the provincials." The Provincial Elementary Curling Championship will be held February 19-21 in Inger- soll. A five to six member team from R. H. Cornish will partici- patein the 5th annual event. Mr. Philip says the champion- ship is growing and the organiz- ers are hoping the Ontario Curl- ing Association will consider it as one of the annual events it sponsors. Big V now found themselves Bi facing Sunderland with a must win situation to move on into the finals. The first period start- > ed off with Big V still trying to get'things going and after their goalie Doug Short made a couple of key saves Jay Fletcher got them going firing one home with Mark Sauter and Brennan Malcolm assisting on the play. Big V held onto their 1-0 lead for the remainder of the first pe- riod and most of the secoiid peri- od until with only two minutes left Sunderland tied it up at one a piece. By this time Big V had thawed out and were really car- rying the play as they scored two goals in the dying seconds of the period to take a 3-1 lead. First it was Jay Fletcher from Lisa Bonser and Kevin Ed- wards then Lisa Bonser from Fletcher and Jamie Sauter. Sunderland didn't give up, however, and made it a 3-2 game midway into the third pe- riod. Big V once again regained their two goal lead as Scott San- derson one-timed a shotinto the net with Fletcher and Scott Harper assisting on the play. With a 4-2 lead and Sunder- land's goalie on the bench for the extra attacker it was Kevin Edwards that iced the game for Big V lifting one over everyone's heads for the goal and a 5-2 win. Assisting on Big V's final goal were Lisa Bonser and Jamie Sauter. Big V's final game of the tour- nament had them up against a Pineridge Tweens win On Saturday, Jan. 30 at Scu- gog Arena we played host to Mariposa whom deserve credit for arriving due to the weather. "The game was only 48 sec- onds old when Mariposa took a 1 goal lead. Three minutes later Lee- Anne Wakeford tied the game on a nice pass from Dianne Van- derligt. Jennifer Pashley scored her first of three from Alechia Cracknell and Lee-Anne ending the first period with a 2-1 lead. Cindy Verschuuren upped the lead to 3-1 on a beautiful pass from Laura Domik. Less than a minute later Jen Pashley scored 2 more goals from Alechia and Lee-Anne to make it 5-1. After Mariposa scored their second goal of the game Dianne Vanderligt got that one back on a nice set up from Cindy and Alechia. The highlight of the game for us were with less than 3 min- utes to play Laura Domik took a pass from Lee-Anne and beat the Mariposa goalie for her first ever ringette goal. A total team effort gave us the victory as two of our big goal scorers Jennifer Elliot and Pam Hiltz were unavailable to play. Our last league game is next Saturday against Whitby as we prepare ourselves for the playoffs. -- ev ATTENTION SNOWMOBILERS -- POKER RALLY 8 POTLUCK SUPPER Adutts.................... $10.00 per entrant Youth Under 13.... $2.00 per entrant Adult Prize........... The first five minutes of the game seemed a bit slow as both teams went through a feeling out process of each other but then things really started to open up. The game was fast paced and end to end action with both teams having some excellent scoring chances. Eric Beiers came within cen- timeters of notching a couple of goals as did Scott Sanderson who just couldn't seem to buy a goal. : At the other end it was Doug Short stoning the Cannington shooters first from close in then on a breakaway then again with the quick glove hand. With the score 0-0 and time running out everyone was starting to think about overtime. Everyone ex- cept the Big V players on the ice who just kept pressing and pressing until finally with only 13 seconds left in the game Mark Sauter fired one into the corner of the net from Jay Fletcher and Scott Sanderson to ive BigV the 1-0 win. A very ju- lant group of players were pre sented with extremely nice tro- phies from the tournament or- ganizers. | Some of the Big V players that didn't figure in any of the scoring but contributed greatly in other ways were Brad Mon- sma for his excellent work on: defence, Alex Wordley for some eat two way play and David Boner for his hard work and ef- forts. We would also like to give a special thanks to Jay Fletcher and Kevin Edwards who came out to help Big V on the road to victory. : Co Big V's next game is on Feb. 6 at 7:20 a.m. against Scala. B&R Swampers pull even with Blackstock for top spot in league Woody's Auctions emerged victorious in game one of the day as they downed Emmer- son's Insurance by a 3-1 score. Keith Young and Brad Maarse set up Charlie Dennis on the first marker just 28 sec- onds into the game. There was no further scoring in that first period and it was again Woodys who struck next as Wayne Tate netted one from Masaarse and Gene Woodrow. Emmerson's then stormed down the ice on the ensuing faceoff and scored 20 seconds later when Les Allen tucked one _ in from James Hudgins and Joe Parkinson. The final tally went to Brian McBride from Tate and Rob Mason. Game two saw B&R Swam- pers pull even with the Black- stock Brewers in the battle for top place in the league with a 2- 1 win. Blackstock struck first in the opening period when Tim Cochrane and Ron Redman set up Dave Dalton on the power play. The second period turned into Lions Club The competition was very tough and the Lions were elimi- nated after two losses, 5-1 by Bowmanville and 8-0 by Orono. The first game was close as Lions goalie Mike Wadsworth stopped 25 shots and kept the Lions to within one goal until the third period. Bowmanville opened a two goal margin early in the first period but the Lions persisted. Late in the second period with only seconds remaining, Ian Garnett and Ryan Haslem broke away 2 on 2. Garnett fed Haslem a perfect rink wide pass and Ryan broke in alone on the left wing and beat the Bowman- ville goalie. Unfortunately Bow- manville scored three unan- swered goals in the third period to earn the victory. The second game was "just one of those games". A strong Orono team dominated the pla and goalie Mike Wadswort a penalty filled affair and B&R also took advantage of the extra room on the ice with Brian Po- meroy notching one of his two goals on the power play for the win. Monsma Electric counted two early in the final game of the day and hung on to defeat the Framer's Gallery by 2-1. Ken Lynde put the first one in from Dan Jansma before league scor- ing leader Ron Attwood nailed one from Chester Down. This score held up until just over five minutes into the final frame be- fore Framer's Keith Dalton scored from Eric Kristensen and Stephen Kristensen. With 1:40 to play Framer's pulled their goa ie but couldn't come up with the tying goal.
