This is particularly short- sighted at this time. inter- ministerial committee of the Ontario government has recog- nized the lack of services and the need for much more support for learning disabled adults. Is it not better and cheaper to pro- vide adequate services when these people are in school? Also, as current plans go, stu- dents entering Grade 9 of secon- dary schools in September of 1993 will be placed in de- streamed classes containing students with different abilities and learning styles. In-service training of teachers and crea- tive methods will only go so far in meeting the needs of the learning disabled students in this environment. It is impor- tant to keep specially-trained teachers and academic with- drawal services at the secon- dary level. The Durham Board has a well-deserved reputation for running an efficient service. Its members have not abused the public trust. It's important that the implications of the budget that the trustees set be careful- ly considered, so that it is fair and that it not jeopardize those most at risk, such as the learn- ing disabled. To do otherwise might appear to be penny wise but, in the longrun, it would be pound foolish. Yours truly, Joice McKay, President, Durham West Learning Disabilities Association Thankful for hospital To the Editor: An unexpected stay of five days in our local hospital made me realize how thankful and fortunate we should be to have this fine facility in our town. During my stay there, I was treated with the best of care and 'attention. Everybody was so kind and friendly, from the girls who cleaned my room to the girls who made my bed, to the nurses and doctors, they all made me feel welcome and com- ss as fortable. When I needed some- thing they were there, when I needed to talk they found time. A special thanks to my neighbor Sue Morris of the Medical Cen- ter for her promptness, and Dr. Mercer for being there when I needed him. From the bottom of my heart I thank you all. Room 108 will be in my memory for a long time. Yours truly, -.
