Fishfull | Scent or no scent? This is the question many anglers have pondered upon since the introduction of fish scents. When fish scents were originally introduced they were labeled as fish attractors. Its inventors believed that it was capable of attracting fish. Over the past few years anglers have become more educated and have learned that fish scents are not attractors but they do increase your odds in boating fish. Most top tournament pros would tell you that human masks would have been a much more appropriate name for these once thought of magic potions. | believe that the masking effect is what increases your catch ratio. Most scents are made to resemble something natural to the fish and its environment, as opposed to the smell an angler may pass on to their lure while handling it. The slightest hint of an unnatural smell in a fish's domain may spook it into not hitting your lure. We as fishermen are in contact with odor producing products all day prior to an outing on the water, odors such as gas, oil or even the scented soap you washed with that morning may be enough to convince fish to pass up your offering. Once we begin to think of scent as a masking product we will begin to understand their applications and adaptations in our daily fishing routine. | feel the most common misconception with scents is "you must spray your lure once every 15 casts." You must rationalize things. While using slow vertical lures such as a jig or plastic worm this may be an important rule, due to the fact that with a vertical presentation the fish has a chance to study the bait and decide whether or not to hit it. While on the other side of the scale | do not feel it is necessary to use scents on a horizontal lure such as a spinner bait or a crank bait because these fast-moving lures are what is referred to as a reaction type bait. The fish does not think, it does not have time to. It just chases down the bait and attacks it before it's too late. | hope this article has helped clear up some of the myths surrounding fish scents and their use. If you have not tried them yet, give it a shot. You won't be sorry. =leYsEXeN ola Tod (le =I OF: t (ols R- Wate lo: le Big V's scoring was first Eric Beiers with Jamie Sauter and Lisa Bonser assisting then Ja- mie Sauter from Lisa Bonser and Eric Beiers. Big V goalie Doug Short was making some key saves to give his team a shot at coming back and with a bit over a minute to go he was called to the bench in favor of the extra attacker. This move paid off as Big V managed to score as Mark Sauter banged the puck into the net with Jamie Sauter and Brad Monsma as- sisting making it a 5-4 game. Great defense by Richard Jirka, Mike Whalen, Darryl Knight and Zach Fis who received his first penalty. Dylan Harper, Cam MacDon- ald, Wes Langmaid, and Mike MacNeal each had many shots on net but were overpowered by great goal tending. It was a fun but cold day for the players and their families.
