Eaglettes win on home ice The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team skated to a 9-1 win against the Oshawa Novice team at Scugog Arena on Satur- day, Feb. 6. With the weekend tournament in Guelph coming up, coach Virtue's pre-game talk concentrated on the girls playing as a team with empha- sis on ring control, passing to open players, and positional play. He stressed the impor- tance of using this game as a warmup for the tournament, where the play can be most in- tense and the pace alot faster. The girls responded to the charge with some great lead passing up ice and several pass- ing combinations that setup some great scoring opportuni- ties. With a full team turnout, the coach went with three forwards and two defense combinations and each line got on the score- sheet. The first line managed five points with Rhea Baxter, two goals, Nicole Virtue, one goal. and one assist, and Heather Reid, one assist. The second line of Stacey Cunningham, Kristen Waller, and Shannon Warriner got two goals from Stacey and had several good scoring chanc- es with Kristen Barely missing a breakaway on a fine lead-pass pickup and Shannon just miss- ing the net on some great shots. The third line played a strong offensive game with Leanne Layzell notching two goals and one assist and both Alaina Bur- ger and Jackie Pashley getting some scoring chances with fine passing and positional play. Even the defensive pairs got in- volved in the scoring, managing five points. Katherine Cooke took advan- tage of the new three player in rule and made a up-ice rush into the Oshawa end and scored with one of her hard wrist shots. Sarah Verschuuren and Janna Ostafichuk both played a sound defense with strong skating and accurate passing with two and one assists respectively. The best individual effort came with just a minute left when Alaina Davis picked up a loose ring in the Oshawa Zone and ragged the ring for a good 30 seconds before working her way in front of the net and scor- ing on a strong backhand flip past the goalie. Jill Pashley, honing her back- stopping skills for this week's tournament, played another solid game, allowing only the one goal and kicking out the rest. With the Eaglettes ready and well prepared for Guelph, it 18 shaping up to be an interest- ing and fun away weekend, with our new opponents being Ayr, Guelph and Waterloo. Stay tuned for results next week. Atom house league On Saturday, Feb. 6 Port Perry Lions played back to back, fast paced wide open hockey games. Game one: Whitby Auto Wreckers 3 Port Lions 0. In game one Lions came out on the short end of a 3-0 loss to Whitby Auto Wreckers. Lions goalie Mike Wadsworth faced 20 shots and wreckers goalie Eric Bird was well deserving of a shutout turning back 12 Lions shots. Wreckers opened the scoring as Russ Brown blasted a back- hand shot into the upper left hand corner with the assist go- ing to Beau Jolicoeur. Cam Vernes put wreckers up by two able assisted by Jon Sanders. The second period was score- less as both teams continued their wide open play. Ryan Ke- hoe and Brian Harris for Lions and Cary Cleyndert and Alex McLaughlin showed good hus- tle and determination on every shift. The final goal was scored by Wrecker's Jon Sanders with as- sists going to Jamie Page and Reid McTaggart. Both teams should be congratulated as only one penalty was assessed late in the third period. Game Two: Lake Scugog Lumber 6, Port Perry Lions 4. The second game of the after- noon was a high scoring, high spirited affair in which both teams shot a high scoring per- ceritage. Scugog Lumber scored 6 goals on 24 shots for a 25 per- cent shooting accuracy total. Port Lions managed 4 goals on 11 shots for a 27 percent shoot- ing accuracy total. Although many goals were scored credit must be given to Lions goalie Mike Wadsworth who stopped 13 difficult shots in the third pe- riod alone. Scugog Lumber opened the scoring with an unassisted goal by Joel Phoenix. Three minutes later Jeremy Hall tied the score for the Lions, assisted by Ken Ellis. Lumber went ahead with another solo effort by Tim Wray, but Lions clicked on a power play marker as Matt Cracknell tied the game with assists going to Ken Ellis and Ryan Haslem. The first period ended with Lumber taking a 3- 2 lead as Joel Phoenix scored with assists going to Greg Lans- dell and John Bacon. The second period ended in 4- 4 tie as Lumber opened the scoring early in the period as Robbie Taylor found the mark assisted by Tim Wray. Lions roared back on two very excit- ing goals. Ken Ellis went end to end to set up Matt Cracknell, and with only seconds remain- ing Ian Garnett scored one of the prettiest goals of the game on a solo end to end rush. Lumber pressed in the third period as Joel Phoenix complet- ed his hat trick scoring unas- sisted at 10:54. John Bacon added the insurance marker as- sisted by Greg Lansdell. Lum- ber Goalie Ben Russell played a steady game stopping several breakaways and making a key save late in the third period as Lions Jason Howarth broke in all alone. Congratulations should go to Lumber's Matt Vaughan and Rodney Bond who continue to ghow good hustle and enthu- giasm and to Lions Matt Crack- nell and Ian Garnett who led the team with aggressive offen- give rushes and determined backchecking. Jason Johansen from 1st Seagrave took the award for the best tip-up, while Adam Koyan from 1st Cannington took the honors for the biggest fish at the Pine Ridge District Ice Fishing Derby. The boys are pictured with Paul Lonergan and Ed Jo- hansen, both leaders from 1st Seagrave. Mr. Lonergan was also the co-ordinator of the day's events. Pearce Auctioneers split weekend games with Peterborough The Auctioneers hosted Pe- terborough Friday night in Port. With excellent wide open hockey we had a tough time get- ting a team on the scoreboard. Excellent goal tending by Thomas Lee and Darcy Ste- phens kept Peterborough from scoring. After two periods of great hockey and two minutes left in the third period Adam Moynes sent a nice pass to Dean Van Camp and up to Trevor Weisflock for a hard won goal which proved to be the game winner. Great job done by our defencemen Tim Jones, Dane Gray, Scott Duncan and Gerard Timmers in keeping our lead in place. Saturday the team travelled to Peterborough for the second game. After a sluggish two peri- ods which left us down by a goal, the third period play found Port picking up the tempo and for- wards playing in a more aggres- sive manner. Down now by two goals our wingers fought very hard and gave us many good shots on net but Peterborough net minding was too great. With time running out Trevor picked up a loose puck at the blue line and with an excellent move on ReRReekreeeReRR RRR "2 Avon Lemons UXBRIDGE SWIM is again taking orders for citrus fruit.
