"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Hydro's cancelled plans could still affect Scugog By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Despite Ontario Hydro's can- cellation of plans for a link to the Greater Toronto Area, Scugog could still be affected. Hydro Chairman Maurice Strong recently announced the cancellation of plans for a 500- kilovolt transmission line be- tween Sudbury and the GTA. The decision to scrap a pur- chase agreement for 1,000 mega-watts of power from Man- itoba Hydro, as well as the scal- -ihg back of other programs, prompted the move. Ontario Hydro will now con- centrate on studies aimed at im- proving theservicein the GTA. Although the cancellation of the project is good news for some communities, it is not for the Township of Scugog. Ward 4 Councillor David Dietlein says there are two pro- Uxbridge considers fee hike for out of township residents using Uxpool The Town of Uxbridge is con- sidering an increase to the fee structure at its Uxpool for out of town residents. In a unanimous decision at a meeting on Monday, Uxbridge voted to discuss the matter with its Pool Board. According to Mayor Gerri Lynn O'Connor, the board will consider increasing the fees per session of lessons at the pool for non-residents by $5 to $10. Under the current system, there is no subsidized rate for residents of the municipality. But Mayor O'Connor esti- mates that 25 per cent of the participants enrolled in the swimming lessons are from out- side communities. She adds that last year it cost the town- ship $37,000 to maintain the pool. Although council is consider- ing the fee increase, Mayor O'Connor says it is not their in- tention to eliminate outside use of the pool. "We're not trying to put it out of reach to put kids out of swim- ming," she said. : But Mayor O'Connor said the municipal taxpayers should be able to use the pool at a cheaper rate. The decision to alter the fee structure was the result of a de- cision by Scugog's Planning Committee last week to deny funding to the Uxbridge Swim Club. Mayor Howard Hall had sug- gested Scugog give $500 to the club to send four members of the swim club, including one from Port Perry, to a national meet later this month in New Bruns- wick. ~ But in a vote of 3-2, the re- quest was denied. : This decision infuriated the mayors from both municipali- ties. A decision will be reached in a few weeks, Mayor O'Connor said. One route travels north- south through Reach and the Marsh Hill area, east of Chalk Lake, while the other travels through Manvers and the southeast corner of Cartwright. "Both lines will connect to the Darlington Station. A hydro corridor and trans- former site is also being consid- ered in the Zephyr area of Ux- bridge. Ontario Hydro plans to iden- tify the preferred route in March 1994, with construction beginning in the fall of 1997. Hydro's plans to continue the project is "terrible news" to Scu- gog, Councillor Dietlein says. He fears this will pit community against community as they at- tempt to fight the project. "This could mean that there will be considerable upset in our township in October when alter- native routes and sites are an- nounced," he said. Councillor Dietlein says the major question of need should be addressed to determine whether this project is viable. He is calling on Hydro to begin the environmental process over again. "At present, the need for a new transmission corridor re- mains questionable, particular- ly with the cancellation of the Manitoba purchase, so alterna- tives should be explored first." Councillor Dietlein says some groups in the area, including the Green Umbrella Group, are planning to meet to co-ordinate their plan of attack. But he fears if Hydro proves the need for such a project, the fight could be fruitless. "If they prove the need, the fight will be difficult," he says. "But the critical question is need." Aside from the question of need, Councillor Dietlein says there are a number of other fac- tors which the groups opposed to the project should consider. These include. the health haz- ards concerning = electro- magnetic radiation, aesthetics and the expropriation of private and.
