A PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, Fébruary 16, 1963 - 31 {[ The Community Nursing Home Petites were on the road again this weekend. After miss- ing out on a trip to the final last weekend in Richmond Hill the C.N.H. girls were looking for better things in Guelph. The opening game was " against little known Mitchell vho opened the scoring. Leanne Holt evened the game on a nice pass from Lisa LeFort. Mitchell took a two goal lead before Jennifer Hammond put Port within one. Assisting on this goal were Leanne Davison and Melissa Hooker. Then with just 14 seconds left in the period Melissa set up Leanne Holt in the slot and the period ended 3- ;, 3 Port took the lead when Jen- nifer Imrie intercepted a clear- ing pass, stepped in and drilled one into the back of the net. Mitchell evened the score in short order and the momentum changed. From this point to the end it was all Mitchell and Port suffered an 8-4 defeat despite a solid effort by all. The game two opponent was Waterloo. A must win or game three was meaningless. Julia Leamen started Port with an unassisted goal, but the Waterloo phenom, No. 17 tied the game and period one ended 1-1. Lauren Christie put the nurs- HA EE | 31 Bry Gist a ing home team ahead on a nice three way passing play started by Melissa and centred by Lisa LeFort. > On their next shift Lisa set u Jennifer Imrie and the three player in rule was proving to be Port's forte. After a line change Alicia Burgess moved the ring to Leanne Holt who found Jenni- fer Donnelly and the "wrinkles" girls looked good. With three minutes left Wa- terloo had a goal called back on an obvious two line pass and the game ended 4-1 in Port's favor. Game three was against host Guelph who had suffered two crushing defeats. Despite all ef- forts including no stop time, Port outscored Guelph 20-0. Scoring for Port were Lauren Christie, Jennifer Imrie each with three. Shooters with two were Lisa LeFort, Melissa Hooker and Jennifer Donnelly. Single scorers went to Miranda Burgess, Alicia Burgess, Leanne Davison and Julia Lea- men. This win put Port in the final against Mitchell which, as it turns out, was a Select team. Port never got on track and all were sluggish being outshot 44- 6 and outscored 7-0. A good weekend was had by all despite the final game score. Next weekend the playoffs be- Port to meet Bowmanville \| MoJacks knock Uxbridge out of playoff contention By Shawn Bastarache As head coach of the Port Perry MoJacks, Ken Harman has been involved in some great playoff battles. This season fig- ures to hold much of the same during the playoffs as five of six clubs in the Central division stack up quite evenly against each other. Harman's first battle of 1993 'ended Thursday night when he guided his young team to an 8-5 victory and a 4-1 series victory over the Uxbridge Bruins to ad- vance to the divisional semi- final. "I know it was 4-1 but those were five of the toughest games I've ever been in in one series," said a relieved Harman follow- ing Thursday's win. "Any of them could've went either way." Four of the five games were decided by two goals or less and, on two occasions the clubs de- cided things via an extra period, all lending validity to Harman's comments. "We got the breaks when we needed them and capitalized on our chances," said Harman. He felt there was one major key to the Modack's first-round suc- cess, and no doubt hopes it will continue throughout the post- season. "The difference was goal . 'tending," he said. "It came down to goaltending as it often does." Between Ian Cooper and Roy Kennedy, the MoJacks have a two-punch combination that would make any coach envious. Following Cooper's 7-6 win in ries. Kennedy, a late arrival cour- tesy LJ the ham B squad, stepped the starting role and has the transi- tion quite nicely. . -. "I don't mind coming in for the playoffs," said Kennedy af- ter facing 42 shots Thursday night. "I like the pressure," he said. Kennedy also said that, al- though he takes nothing away from the MoJacks and its organ- ization, his real motivation comes from the hopes of return- ing to Jr. B next season. Roy Kennedy has come up big since - arriving from Markham JuniorBsquad "Coming down here I've got something to prove," he said.
