"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" : - AE EIN Pv , QQ 'PORT PERRY STAR = Tudsday, February 16, 1593 - 33 Port leads series five points to one Mistakes at critical times and the inability to finish off good scoring chances cost the Port Perry Precision Construction Eagles Midgets a possibility of sweeping the Milton Sandstone Transport Midgets in their game in Milton Saturday night. A 2-2 tie set up the need for an- other visit to Milton regardless of the outcome of Monday, Feb. 16th's game. Port dominated the first peri- od as they have in all three games, but had difficulty beat- ing Jeff Currie, who had a strong game in the Milton net. Duane Empringham, who con- tinues to perform well, was the only Eagle to get one by Currie; lifting his own rebound high into the net on a power play. Milton took advantage of a lit- tle sloppy play in the Port end to tie the game later in the period. The goal, along with the return of a team leader from vacation, The Port Perry XL Gas Bar novice girls participated in the 13th Annual Guelph Ringette - Tournament on the weekend and skated away with the silver medal. It was a very enjoyable and successful time with the team and their families staying at the Holiday Inn, complete with indoor pool, hot tub and . sauna. The Eaglettes had a very busy Saturday with three games at 8:00, 11:30 and 4:00. ' The first game was the XL'ers go up against the entry from Ayr and the girls came up with a. solid effort and a 8-0 win. Leading the charge for Port were Nicole Virtue, 3 goals and 2 assists, Stacey Cunningham, 2 goals and 1 assist, Shannon Warriner, 1 goal and 2 assists, Alaina Burger, 1 goal and 2 as- sists, Leanne Layzell, 1 goal, Janna Ostafichuk, 4 assists, Kristen Waller, 2 assists, Sarah Verschuuren, 2 assists, Kathe- rine Cooke, 2 assists with Alai- na Davis, Jackie Pashley, Heather Reid, and Rhea Baxter playing a great game. Jill Pash- ley with a great defense in front, had a relatively easy time for her shutout. Game 2 had Port up against the host Guelph team and the result was an- other 8-0 win with Janna get- ting the shutout with a solid backstop effort. Scoring for the Eaglettes were Stacey, 2 goals and 2 as- sists, Leanne, 2 goals, Shannon, 1 goal and 1 assist, Kristen 1 as- sist, and Jackie Pashley, play- ing her best ringette this sea- son, 1 assist. Game 3 was the best game of the tournament with Port and Waterloo Gold playing to a 6-6 tie. The Ea- glettes were ahead but the girls tired in the second period and gave up the lead with Waterloo seemed to inspire Milton to a somewhat better effort through a scoreless second period. Early in the third, the Eagles pulled ahead again. Jeremy Geer won a faceoff deep in Mil- ton territory cleanly to Scott Heasman at the left point. Heasman's low bullet was de- flected perfectly onto the top shelf by Steve Desautels, who was parked off the post. Geer and Daryl Bourgeois of the Country Style Bantams did double duty on the evening, changing sweaters following their own game to bolster a shortened Eagle bench. Both turned in excellent efforts, with Geer in particular winning face- offs consistently and making several key defensive plays late in the game. Again, a hesitation in a clear- ing play set the stage for Milton to notch the equalizer, this one a shorthanded effort. The goal and ran out of steam. Port's oth- er scorers were Stacey, 2 goals, Rhea, 1 goal and 1 assist, Katherine, 2 assists Nicole, 1 goal, Leanne 1 goal, Sarah 2 as- sists, Janna, 1 goal, Shannon, 1 assist, and Kristen, 1 assist. The championship game on Sunday had Port and Waterloo inarematch. . = With several of Port's players not feeling the best with a bad bug going around and the whole team not 100 percent from the four games and the swimming and partying at the hotel, the Eaglettes could not get things going and were never really in the game but still put up a val- Bowling Monday Night Ladies Team Standings: Green Machine 20, Purple Garters 19, Orange Pits 18, Blue Jays 11, Yellow Bikinis 8, Red Roses 8. Despite Port throughout most of the game, Milton had more chances than in either of the other games and Rick Hutchinson was at his best, having no chance on either * goal. : There was a short outbreak of" extracurricular activities with only four seconds left in over- time that will likely cost the team a bench shortage for Mon- day night. Productive winger Ryan Ridgway and defensive stalwart Brad MacArthur pounded out unanimous deci- ~ sions in a couple of spirited bouts. The tie leaves this eight point series at 5-1 in favor of the Ea- les, with game four at home on onday, Feb. 16 at 9:10. Eaglettes win silver iant effort in a 6-2 loss and the silver medal. Jill played her best game in goal and without her, the score would have been a lot more. Scoring for Port were Stacey and Sarah.
