Akcording to Dr. David Camp- bell, a veterinarian with Agri- cul ure Canada, a litter of five Siberian mix puppies may have Durham Police seeking increase In wages Durham Police and the region are in for a major showdown. Durham Regional Police's un- ion, which represents its 500 of- ficers and civilian employees, is seeking a pay hike, as well as improvements in its benefit package. Aside from the benefits, the police association is also seek- ing a better pay agreement for time spent in court, and in- creased funds to officers on com- pensation. Under the present contract, the highest ranking officers re- ceive a yearly salary of $64,344. Fouth-class constables, with at least six months experience get $32,943, while first-class cadets who enter the force get $28,312. Despite the association's want of a better package, Dur- ham Region officials have indi- cated their desire for a zero-per cent increase. Many times over the past year, Regional Chairman Gary Herrema has stressed the need to the various groups that zero- per cent is the route that must be taken for 1993. It is Chairman Herrema's goal to keep the overall regional budget increase to approxi- mately five per cent. But in an interview with the Port Perry Star late last year, Chairman of the Finance Com- mittee Don Hadden, said he ex- pects the Police Services Board's increase to be five to six per cent. He said all other de- partments would not see an in- crease. Formal negotiations between the two sides are expected to be- gin shortly. Chairman Herrema has expressed his desire to have the budget completed by the end of February, almost two months ahead of the usual time. Help for the whole family PINEWOOD CENTRE FOR DRUG AND ALCOHOL PROBLEMS 416-723-8195 (24 HOURS) A part of the Oshawa General Hospital come in contact with a rabid skunk on Washburn Island. Four of the dogs have been eu- thanized and have been sent for testing. But, according to Dr. Camp- bell, a fifth puppy was given away, to a woman who is be- lieved to be from Port Perry, be- fore anyone knew the pups may have been exposed. The litter was larger, and a few other puppies were also giv- en away, but Dr. Campbell said they were gone before the skunk came into the area. It is the last puppy, who was adopted just prior to February 1 he is con- cerned about. He said he wants to find the puppy and speak to the owners about the "potentially serious" situation. A rabid skunk was in the area for several days before being shot on February 1, 1993, Dr. Campbell said. The puppies were known to be in the immedi- ate area where the skunk was shot. Although he said no direct contact with the skunk was seen, "there was every opportu- nity that exposure could have taken place." Because the puppies were too young, they had no vaccina- tions, and Dr. Campbell said "young pups are at a high risk for the disease." "We want to talk to the owner and discuss the situation with them. We do not know what ex- actly has taken place but it has the potential to be very serious, especially since puppies and young children go hand in hand," he said. The owner of the puppy is asked to call the Health of Ani- mals department in Peterbo- rough at (705) 742-2836, or the Durham Health Department at 723-8521. a ------ -------- aiid : A recent food drive at S.A.
