We have been good friends since grade 3, and over the years our friendship has been tested different times; but it has always survived. When my friend started his own business about six years ago, we spent many an evening discussing and trying to solve the problems he was facing in this venture. He returned the favour two and a half years ago when I got the opportunity from Harold Wagg to buy this funeral home. Last year his older brother committed suicide, and as a friend (and a Funeral Director with experience), I made myself available whenever he wanted to talk, which was often. There were times when this was difficult because this was a situation that neither one of us had been in before, where someone close to us had taken their own life. My friend, I'm happy to say, is doing well because he realized a couple of months ago that he needed to talk to a professional counsellor. He explained to me that I was his friend and that I wasn't able to be objective enough. He was right because in this situation I was too close to him and to his family. This reminded me that there are times we need professional help (in this case a Bereavement Counsellor) and that there is absolutely no shame in this. In our area there is Durham Community Bereavement Services - 433-0779.
