There was much anticipa- tion as the girls have been work- ing hard and getting great results on the ice. The first game of the tourna- ment pitted Port against little known Paris. The teams were evenly matched as we quickly found out. Jennifer Donnelly, who was off to Florida after this Cooper started the play in her own end moving the ring smart- ly up ice to Leanne Davison who spotted a breaking Jennifer and the "wrinkles" girls had the lead. Jennifer Donnelly, mak- ing the most of her only game, found Leanne Holt in front on her next shift and Port had a 2-0 bulge. Penalties proved to be a problem in this game with Port twice playing two short' At the start of the second peri-. od Paris struck back for two goals in a space of 50 seconds to holding a slight edge in play. Despite this it took a pair of saves on breakaways by Alicia Burgess to keep the game even as the Paris goalie and defence was proving to be a problém. With less than four minutes to play Jennifer Imrie stepped from her defensive position as she does so well, circled the net and stretched the twine to give . the lead again to Port. Constant Pressure by everyone prevented 'aris from tying the score and game one went into the record minutes into the game. game, opened the sooring five tie the game. Less than a minuge later Julia Leamen gave the team a two goal margin with an unas- sisted marker. Before the period ended Ajax got one back and the score was 2-1. Leanne Holt netted an- other unassisted goal and the lead was again two. Then the two Leannes teamed up to stretch the lead. L. Holt centred the ring to L. Davison who float- ed one over the goalies head and into the back of the net. Ajax kept working hard and penalties again were a factor for the C.N.H. girls as the score was narrowed to 4-2. A nice set- up Lisa LeFort to Jennifer Im- rie and the lead was again three. Another Ajax goal with just over two minutes remain- ing made it interesting after a time out and pulling their goal- ie. Strong defensive play held off the hosts and game two was in the victory column. A victory in game three was a _ must in this six team division. « The opponent was Meitnas "and they scored immediately off the opening free pass. This did not phase the starters though as their determination paid off in a goal at the end of their first shift. Jennifer Hammond enjoy- ing her time out of net assisted on a goal by Julia Leamen. On the next shift Leanne Holt scored unassisted. On the next shift Jennifer Hammond took her turn to score and the Com- munity Nursing Home team was on its way. The flurry was over and with just four seconds left in the period Mariposa nar- rowed the score to 3-2. | From the opening free pass of the second period Melissa setup Leanne Holt and another flurry was about to begin. In the sec- ond period Leanne Holt and Ju- lia both scored another, Melissa and Jennifer Imrie each scored two as Port found the large Olympic pad to their liking. As- sists were given to Julia (two), Leanne Davison, Lauren Chris- 'tie and Leanne Holt had sin- gles. Mariposa picked up one late in the game as they came with their best but the game was out of reach and the C.N.H. girls were headed to the final against rival Whitby 1. From the opening free pass Miranda slid the ring to Melissa who went to the net and snapped .a wrist shot, into the top corner for the early lead. On the next shift just over a minute later Jennifer Hammond wres- tled one out of the corner and skated across for an unassisted goal. After a minute and 20 sec- ~ onds Port was up 2-0. Quickly Whitby responded with one, then another in the 'middle of the period to tie the score and then took the lead. Executing a free pass to per- fection Miranda gave to Melissa and received the return pass. With a nice fake on the goalie pocketed the tying marker. Whitby took the lead with just eight seconds left in the pe- riod (4-3). Four minutes into the final period another Whitby goal gave the opposition some breathing room and it was an uphill battle for Community Nursing Home crew. On a splendid effort showing her determination Jennifer Im- rie brought Port within one midway through the final frame, - From this point on play was dominated by the Nursing Home girls but we were unable to find the combination one more time. The goalie was out it was six against five but time ran out with Port getting a final shot at it with seconds remain- ing. ne For the third time in four tournaments the Community Nursing Home brought home the silver.
