March 65, the Ivory Forest Belles, hot off their Prelim win, travelled to Woolwich to partici- pate in the Belle A division of the Woolwich tournament. Port got off to a disappointing start by going down to defeat to a fast skating North Bay team. How- ever, Port put forth a deter- mined effort forcing North Bay to dig hard and fight for their goals. Megan Marlowe and Val Payne teamed up to enable Jen Smith to fire in Port's first goal. Some hard work around the net by Megan and Jen put Val Payne in position to slip in num- ber two. With less than two min- utes remaining in the first peri- od Karen Kett bounced two markers off the twine. Both goals were scored as aresult of a string of excellent passing origi- nating in Port's defensive end. Kim Poppleton, Melanie Demmer, Tanya Towns and Amy Parliament were awarded well deserved assists. Port's fifth and final effort was tallied by Jen Smith who blasted the ring into the net on a solo effort. The final buzzer saw Port trail- ing by a 8-5 score. Port's second game was against the host team. This proved to be a very frustrating .: game for Port, for although they ~ peppered the Woolwich goal- « tender with numerous shots Port Perry Junior Curling Club, Thursday Night group, held its awards ceremony at the curling club on March 4. "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice oe they were only able to capitalize on three. Karen Kett opened Port's scoring after picking up a pass from Tanya owns. en Smith hooked in Port's second and third efforts. Assists went to Tanya Towns, Michelle Fitz- patrick, Val Payne and Megan Marlowe as the final buzzer sounded, the score read Wool- wich 4 - Port 8, and Megan Mar- lowe slumped to the ice as she sustained an injury to her arm. Megan is now sporting a sling and her expertise will be sorely missed by her teammates. The following game pitted Port Perry against Markham in what unfolded to be something of a shoot-out. During the last 10 minutes the scoring see- sawed back and forth with the outcome being decided in the 'last 32 seconds of the game. Port made some driving plays to total up 12 goals. Karen Kett drove in four markers, with Val Payne nipping in three. Kim Poppleton and Amy Parliament - rattled the mesh with two each. Leea Kinnunen flew in from de- fence to round out the scoring. Jen Smith earned three assists while doubles went to Kim, Val, Michelle, Tanya and Karen. Singles went to Amy and Mela- nie. Final score 12-12. With this tie Port went on to compete for the consolation ti- non-contest. SN IL NI IP I ME I = I= INN NR. 2 After the emotional high of a super comeback series win over Cobourg this weekend it was a let down for our squad as we quickly fell behind two games to zero in the Eastern Ontario fi- nals. It was apparent to the fans that OMHA had goofed in their organization of the Novice playoff system as the "AA" Belleville team (Belleville's population is 37,000!) fully uti- lized their numerical advan- ' tage and easily controlled the : puck throughout both games. The opener of the best-of-five series was in the Belleville rink and thanks to some key saves by Thomas Lee and D'arcy Ste- phens our lads headed for home with a respectable loss by only a 3-1 score. In the second period we took advantage of a line change and defenceman Gerard Timmers made some nifty moves to drill a shot on the Belleville goalie. Like the coach- es say you "always follow the puck to the net" and Trevor Lance was rewarded with a big rebound which he tucked into the net for our marker. : Our boys had to adjust to "go- ing over the boards" for line changes for the first time ever, as the Belleville visitors bench had only one gate. In any case full marks to the Belleville players who outhustled us in this as well as the second game with good positional play, rapid puck pursuit and relentless back checking. Game two at home got off to a bad start as Belleville got on the board with less than a minute gone in the game. This was a bad sign as our lads had hoped to score first and steal some wind from the Belleville sails. Our team discipline broke down thereafter and our faceoff cover- age as well as our man-to-man defénce disappeared. The Belle- ville squad gave our players some lessons in the fine art of "gtickwork" throughout the The runners-up from the Port Perry Junior Club awards were Matt Coyne, skip, Erin Smith, vice, Graeme Powell, second and Sarah Kirk, lead. ized for perfect attendance was Mark Willes who is being congratulated by organizer Pam Byers. Missing from the picture is Adam Jones, most improved player. Despite the blow-out score there were some bright mo- ments over the weekend howev- er. Our defence of Scott Dun- can, Gerard, Dane Gray and Tim Jones fought valiantly in numerous three on one and three on two Belleville rushes. In game two, (where we actu- ally had more shots on goal then in the first game) several goal posts and good Belleville goal- tending prevented our forwards from ruining the Belleville shutout. Port took to the ice with only nine skaters when Tanya Towns, suffering a knee injury, was forced to join Megan Mar- lowe on the sidelines. This put some stress on the defensive duo of Michelle Fitzpatrick and Leea Kinnunen who proved to be equal to the challenge. With some timely saves from Tracy Pelow, the girls held Mark- ham's goals at three. Port went to work early in the game and set up some well per- formed passing plays to whip in five als. Kim Poppleton opened the score on a pass from ren Kett. Karen and Kim continued to connect on some well thought out passing plays which resulted in Port's second goal by Amy Parliament. Amy and Kim then teamed up to get the ring over to Michelle Fitzpa- trick who charged in to bring the total to three. Goal four was scored when Jen Smith whipped across the ice to fire in Port's fourth. Karen Kett pro- vided Port with some breathing space as she slipped in Port's fifth goal from a prone position in front of the net. Amy Parlia- ment and Melanie mmer earned assists. The game ended with Port winning by a 5-3 score to be- come the winners of the consola- tion game.
