"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Tweens win silver medal The Pineridge girls travelled west to compete in the Wool- wich Tournament. Our first game was Saturday morning at 8 a.m. vs London. Port pulled their goalie in the last minute to no avail as we were defeated 5-3. Goal scorers were Pashley, Amanda and Elli- ot. Game two was a must win sit- uation and the girls rallied to beat the home team Woolwich 7-4. This put us into the gold medal game. Goal scorers were Elliot with the hat trick, singles to Pashley, Hiltz, Lee Anne Wakeford and Cracknell. Vers- chuuren chipped in with two as- sists. The gold medal game on Sun- day put us against the strong London team. They outskated us to a 9-2 win. Goal scorers were Cracknell and Elliot with Verschuuren picking up an as- sist. For some of our girls it was the first ever medal in ringette and the girls deserved it. Manvers Tweens compete In tourney On Saturday, Feb. 27 the Manvers Cagone Skate Sharp- ening Tweens, playing as host team, had an 8 a.m. appoint- ment with the ever dangerous Mariposa Tweens. Game 1: Manvers 7 - Maripo- sa 6. The rivalry between these two fine Tween teams contin- ued as both teams came out of their dressing rooms just smok- ing. The fans who attended this game really got their money's worth as these two teams put on quite a show. Scoring for Man- vers was Jennifer Dingman, as- sisted by Kendra Clarke and (Cricket) Krista Cameron at 7:44 of period one. Jennifer Dingman scored her second goal of the game from Miranda Small at 6:55, to end period one in a 2-2 tie. Jaime Bethune scored from Alison Chapman and Krista Cameron at 14:29 of period 2. Mandy Richmond scored unassisted at 13:08. Ju- lie Kennedy scored, assisted by Jaime Bethune and Alison Chapman at 9:20. Jennifer Dingman scored to complete her Hat Trick from Julie Kenne- dy at 4:13. With the score tied 5- 5 and with 12 seconds left on the clock, Jennifer Dingman scored from Lisa Nesbitt to de- feat Mariposa 7-6. Jen Ding- man scored four goals in the game. Playing in goal for Man- vers was Michele Branton. Game 2: Oshawa 4 - Manvers 3. Any team from Oshawa is al- ways the same, they are always big, strong and fast. These two teams had never met before, so Oshawa had never seen the Big Red Machine from Manvers in action. Manvers struck the sco- resheet first at 13:22 to take the early lead 1-0. Scoring for Man- vers was Jaime Bethune from Alison Chapman and Leanne Morgan. Oshawa scored at 9:04 and again at 8:24 to take a 2-1 lead. Manvers scored again when Alison Chapman scored from Jaime Bethune at 1:04 to end period one, in a 2-2 tie. In period two both teams were going non-stop and the de- fences and goalies both worked overtime to keep their team in the game. With both teams playing well there was no scor- ing until Oshawa got a break with 3:02 left on the clock to take a 3-2 lead. At 2:59 Jennifer Dingman scored from Leanne Morgan and Krista Cameron to tie the game at 3-3. With just 1:22 left on the clock and over- time looming, Oshawa scored to put the game out of reach for the Manvers team, with Oshawa winning 4-3. B.E.A. went to Krista Cameron. Consolation Championship With the hard fought game at noo' between Oshawa and Manvers, with Oshawa wind- ing up on top by a 4-3 score it was only fitting that these two fine teams play for all the mar- bles in the Consolation Cham- pionship. Oshawa struck first at 8:35 of period one, when they found the corner on a low hard shot for a 1-0 lead. With the pe- riod winding down, Oshawa scored again at 2:09 for a 2-0 lead. With Manvers applying the pressure and holding the edge on shots, it finally paid off with 12 clicks left on the clock when Leanne Morgan gained control of the ring at centre and hit Jaime Bethune in the Oshawa zone over to Jennifer Morgan and She Scores: "Yes!" It is now 2-1. The period ended with both teams playing good disciplined ringette. Oshawa started the second period off quick when they scored at 14:18 for a 3-1 lead. Oshawa scored again at 13:50 to go ahead 4-1. At 11:28 the Manvers "Spark Plug" grabbed the ring deep in their own zone up to Jennifer Morgan and she put a nice pass to Lisa Nesbitt in the slot and she slammed it home to start the Manvers come back bid. With Manvers down 4-2 in the second period and all the Manvers defence playing very well, Morgan, Bethune, Kenne- dy and Cameron. All the Man- vers players were playing like family. Miranda Small and Lisa Nesbitt were patrolling the boards like pros do. Kendra Clarke and Julie Kennedy did the (Mild Mugging) in the cor- ners to cause Oshawa to make a turn over. Alison Chapman (Al- ley-Cat) was in the slot in front of the Oshawa goal, when a Jennifer Dingman shot hit the Oshawa goalie at 100 miles per hour - "Boom" - the shot went off the goalie's pads and Alison slammed it home to tie the game 4-4 with 2:40 left in the game. Manvers was applying the pressure and had Oshawa on the ropes, when Oshawa split the Manvers defence and beat the goalie with a low shot to the far corner at 1:20 to go ahead for good and win the "B" championship. Manvers showed lots of good sportsmanship and the home town crowd let the girls know their work was appreciated. Nice try from Manvers. The team wishes Linsey Ingram a speedy recovery from her brok- en collar bone injury. Honora- ble mention for good hustle and good defensive effort has to go to the whole team, for only a complete team effort could get them to the A or B Champion- ship. Nice tournament girls. Playing in goal for Manvers was Michele Branton. Team members are: Jennifer Elliot, Alechia Cracknell, Diane Vanderligt, Lee Anne Wake- ford, Laura Domik, Genni Tay- lor, Jen Pashley, Pam Hiltz, s1ll Topham, Amanda Wakeford, Emma Russell and Cindy Vers- chuuren. Coaching staff are: Dan Lally, Janice Pashley and Linda Elliot. The team would like to thank Genni Taylor our goalie whom played all three games this weekend under a lot of pain due to knee problems. Her deter- mined effort and outstanding play led us to the medal. Our next home game is a playoff match against Whitby. Guardian Drugs Tweens claim league crown Saturday, March 5, the Guar- dian Drugs Tween A Ringette team travelled to Markham to play for the league champion- ship. Once again, the Port girls dis- played their keen talent as they skated miles and were first to the ring almost every time. By half time, each team was exhausted. They both were playing handicapped with in- Jured and absent players. You were certainly missed Cara! Natasha, who was hurting badly, and Brooke set Shona up for Port's first goal. Soon after, Janna made a timely pass to Ja- nine who put one away. Mark- ham added to the excitement ty- ing the score at 2-2. Bonni-Jo made a beautiful in- terception at the blue line and deked the goalie out for a 3-2 lead. Brooke set Dana up as she placed one high in the corner. Markham retaliated to make it only a one goal spread. Eight seconds later Natasha demon- strated her defensive power skating passed three of Mark- ham's players. She spied Heath- er in the open who made an ac- curate pass to Shona. W-O-W!! She dazzled their goalie and their whole team with her new backward "light ring shot." The Guardian squad were totally amazed at their 5-3 lead as this Markham team is an "AA" team and Portisan "A" team. To secure the lead, Shona scored again unassisted deking the goalie out. This shot caused Markham's goalie to crash backwards and the result was a re-occurring back injury. With nine minutes left and leading by three goals, Port hoped they had the championship in the tab. N-O-T!! Their second goal- ie, who had never played in net before, was absolutely amazing. She saved numerous excellent shots. Special mention goes to Brooke and Laura on their many unsuccessful shots on the goalie. Katie was kept busy the whole game by a determined bunch of girls who are not used to being on the losing side. She challenged all their shots and only let one in during the second period to take the champion- ship 6-4. _ The girls are extremely anx- 1ous for the strong competition awaiting them March 25-28 at the Provincial Championship in Ottawa.
