"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Planning underway for Celebrate Durham '94 A year-long celebration is planned in honor of the region's 20th anniversary and everyone isinvited. "Celebrate Durham '94" is a year-long celebration of cultu- ral and sporting events throughout the Region of Dur- ham. According to Allan Pollock, Scugog's representative, groups in each municipality are being encouraged to include their sports or cultural events in this celebration. All groups have the opportu- nity to list events in a special Durham-wide activity calendar to be published later this year which will be circulated to each household. The aim of the project is to get more people involved in the events not only in their own community, but throughout the region. "I think it's a great idea," said Mr. Pollock. "People have to get involved in this kind of thing. It ~ will help put Scugog on the map." Representatives from the mu- nicipality's sports clubs attend- ed a kick-off meeting in Port Perry Thursday evening to hear details of the celebration. And organizers came away feeling positive. Marilyn Pearce, chairman of the Parks and Recreation Com- mittee, believes the added expo- sure of the events will benefit not only the organizations, but also the municipalities. "It's going to have a benefit for Scugog as people will come to the area to participate," she said. Celebrate Durham '94 will be a year-long celebration of Durham Region's 20th anniversary. It is hoped during the year sports and cultural clubs from the eight municipalities link their activi- ties with this celebration. An information meeting was held on March 4 in Port Perry for local organizations. Although nothing is concrete, plans were discussed in which Festival Days would be co- ordinated with a number of sporting events to form a week- end extravaganza. Hockey tournaments, a row- ing regatta, baseball challeng- es, a figure skating exhibition and a lawn bowling tournament were all discussed during the meeting. There are also a number of ac- tivities planned on the larger re- gional level, including a bicycle tour through each municipality. The opportunities for the types of events are endless, which makes the year that much more interesting, the or- ganizers say. But the main idea is to get region-wide involve- ment. Councillor Pearce sees the year-long event, scheduled to gin in early 1994, as a chance for Scugog to promote itself. She says there are so many activi- ties happening in the munici- pality in which people are not aware. She called on club organizers in the area to get involved. "We just don't blow our horns loud enough or long enough and it's about time we let them know how good we are up here."
