His brother Stratton Bull of Holland sent him this Chinese bird kite for Christmas. Rev. Charles Bull \_ J By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star i A passion for kites has Rev. ! Charles Bull flying high on a | wing and a prayer. | Rev. Bull became interested in kites when he was a young boy. 1 "I built a kite for myself," he 0 recalls. "It was quite a large kite and it would go really high, al- most out of sight." That passion he felt as a youngboy has never let up. "Whenever I find a kite in a hardware store or a toy store, I | can't passitby." Rev. Bull says kite flying is similar to a walk in the woods. "So much of what we do today has to be useful," he says, add- ing Kite flying is a useless, play- ful diversion from the hassles of everyday life. Not only is kite flying relax- ing, it is also an economical and an environmentally-conscious form of recreation. "You don't have to spend a lot of money on them," Rev. Bull says. "A good nylon kite will last a lifetime." One of his favorite things to do is to go to the park with four or five kites. After getting each kite airborne, he passes the con- trols over to children playing in the park. "Pretty soon, the sky is filled with colorful kites. It's great to get other people involved." Rev. Bull says there are three locations in Port Perry which are ideal for kite flying. They in- clude the high school track, the soccer fields, and, depending on the direction of the wind, Palm- | er Park. "The park is better now since they took the wires down," he says. Safety is always a concern, Rev. Bull says, adding a kite should never be flown near pow- er wires or during thunder- SE a i i enjoys the relaxing sport of kite flying [EN:ueaser storms. Even the threat of a thunderstorm can be dangerous as the air can be electrically charged. According to John and Kate Dyson, authors of "Fun With Kites: How to Make 18 Beauti- ful Kites", the hobby can be en- Joyed year round. "The best kite-flying wind is a steady breeze that's sufficient to ruffle your hair and stir the leaves on the trees," the Dysons say. "Gusty winds that bend whole trees and send clouds scudding, prompt people to re- mark 'Good weather for kites', but in fact these conditions are too strong." For best results, the Dysons suggest looking for a "clean" wind; one that comes over along stretch of open ground where there are no buildings or trees to make it whirl in a way that makes kite flying difficult. Over the years, kites have been used for more than just recreational activity. The first known use of a kite was by a Chinese general in 200 BC, the Dysons say. The general needed to calculate the exact distance of the enemy's fortress walls so that he could build a tunnel underneath them. He did this by flying a kite low over the walls and then measuring thelength of string he had used. They have also been used to pull canoes, catch fish, and de- termine weather. The Scugog Memorial Public Library has several excellent books on the origins of kites and how to make your own, includ- ing "Fun With Kites: How to Make 18 Beautiful Kites" by John and Kate Dyson, "Catch the Wind" by Gail Gibbons, "A Kite on the Wind" by Douglas A Fales, "Making Kites" by Eve Barwell and Conrad Bailey, and "Fishing for Angels: The Magic of Kites" by David Evans.
