The provincial government recently announced grants for roads construction and mainte- nance projects. And although the Township of Scugeg was in- cluded on the list, it was well be- low the figure it received last year. According to Roads Superin- tendent Ronn MacDonald, the township received $947,000 in annual subsidies. This is down $32,000 from last year. As a result of this 3.3-per cent cut in funding, some projects will have to be downgraded or put on hold, says Finance Com- mittee Chairman Yvonne Christie. She says many of the projects planned will have to be "band- aid projects" until additional money is obtained. "There are projects that have been set down because of less money," she said. Councillor Christie says as a result of this funding cut, the roads will experience some dete- rioration, as the township will not be able to address all the concerns. But she says it will not be to the point of becomong a hazard to the community. "I think through mainte- nance, our staff is sufficiently expert to maintain the service levels of the roads," she said. Township officials are not content to sit back and accept the cut backs, however. Mayor Howard Hall says a INTRODUCING GM GOODWRENCH SERVICE PLUS Great Timing LUBE, OIL & FILTER IN MINUTES OR LESS 29 WM Cut in roads piggy subsidies will pn ¢ i hurt Scugog Ep, hy Ss meeting is scheduled with offi- cials from the Ministry of Trans- portation later this week to dis- cuss the grant structure. He says they are particularly concerned that Scugog's share dropped by 3.3 per cent, while some adjacent communities re- ceived an increase. "We want to know why we're down in our subsidy money, while other Durham municipal- ities are up," he said. "I can't understand why the subsidies are down when they're trying to promote tour- ism not just for Durham, but for the province." The meeting will address the funding cuts and also question how the money is apportioned. Councillor Christie says Scu- gog is one community which needs the extra funds due to the "uniqueness" of the community. She points to the geography of the township and the lake as a major cost factor. As roads end at the lake, the crews must often double back resulting in extra time and money. "We're not a square town- ship," she said. "All communi- ties are unique, but the unique- ness of some create expenditures of necessity that are higher than others," she said. Councillor Christie says if ad- ditional money is obtained pro- jects will be put back on the board. There are rumors that additional money is available, but she says she is not counting on the money until it is actuall in the bank. OR THE NEXT ONE IS FREE.
