Petry Legion "A" PeeWee team but they have advanced to the All-Ontario finals. The Legion gang are in the semi-final roun of the O.M.H.A. playoffs against: Bradford and at first it looked like we could wind it up in five games, but at this point, we are heading into game seven to- night (Sunday), leading seven points to five, with eight points required to proceed to the All- Ontario finals. A win or a tie will send the boys on, but a loss will mean another game against Bradford. The opening game last Friday in Port saw our first win 4-2 with Ian Jones opening the scoring from Jay Strickert and Scott Heffern, and then Shane Horton getting our second from Scott Jeffrey and Mike Heas- man. Bradford came back with one and then Danny Robinson opened our lead to 3-1 with an assist to Scott Heffern. Brad- ford again came within one and Scott Jeffrey got our last with an assist to Danny R. and Shane. Kent Johnston handled the goal tending for the win and was in top form. The next game was Sunday in Bradford where we dropped a 4- 2 game. Bradford jumped into a 3-0 lead by the second period, and our 'boys then had to re- group. It was the last two min- utes of the third when we first; tallied, an un-assisted goal by Rob Murphy who broke in on net, and another from Daryl McEnaney with an assist to Rob and Scott Heffern. The goalie was pulled for the extra attack- er but one slipped into our open net. Luke Carnaghan was on top of the game in net despite the loss, as Bradfords' first three goals were all well-earned. We returned to Bradford on Monday for game three and came out with a 6-3 victory. Goals went to Daryl McEnaney unassisted, Rob Murphy from Shane Norton, Scott Heffern from Shane, Shane from Danny Lyons and Scott Jeffrey, Scott Heffern again from Rob Mur- phy and Shane, and Shane in the open net, unassisted. A five point night for Shane - nice job. Kent Johnston was a giant in our goal that night. Wednesday night saw a re- turn to Port ice and another 4-2 win for the Legion gang. Rob Murphy opened the scoring on a power play with assists going to Mike Morden and Colin Laird. Then Jay Strickert broke in from the corner, after a pass from Scott Heffern, and beat the Bradford goalie. Bradford was able to come back and tie it due to us playing short handed but Mike Morden broke that tie on a long shot from the blue line, unassisted, and scored 'what turned out to be the win- ner. Shane added an insurance marker with assists to Jay Strickert and Adam Jones. On Friday, Port hosted the fifth game and dropped a 5-3 decision, but Port had lots of chances, but couldn't capitalize. Scott Heffern opened the scoring from Danny Lyons and Shane, and then Daryl McEna- ney added another from Rob Murphy and Rob a final from Shane. Kent and Luke shared the net and certainly kept us close. The scored was actually 4-3 but Bradford popped one in the open net after that. Seth Gray sustained a leg in- jury when he slid into our goal post, trying to save that goal and had to miss Saturday's game. We wish him a speedy re- covery and a quick return. Our sixth game on Saturday in Bradford saw the best game yet and to cap off that game, it ended 2-2 after a ten' minute overtime. : The boys tallied their first when Mike Morden handed off to Rob Murphy who broke in and counted our first. This tied the game at one each. We then went ahead late in the second | when Shane and Scott Heffern set up Daryl who sent a high fly ball shot from the point which landed behind the goalie and gave us a 2-1 lead. Bradford yas able to tie it in the third on a power play and despite out playing them the Port gang 'could not add the winner. We had a breakaway, a penalty shot and even a couple off the post, and to top it off, we kept Bradford in their own end for six minutes of the ten minute overtime, but we couldn't add the winner. Kent Johnston played the game of his life and was out- standing. Great job Kent. It is not 9:20 p.m. on Sunday evening and we have just re- turned home after handing Bradford an 8-2 thrashing and we are now advancing to the All-Ontario finals against An- caster. This was an -excellent game ° and again Kent Johnston was a star. Port jumped out to a 2 goal lead by the end of the first with Jay Strickert counting both, one unassisted and Adam Jones assisting on the other. Turnta Page 32 Midget Eagles lose first game of finals . Port Perry Precision Con- struction Eagles were tempo- rarily grounded by the Ancaster Midgets Friday night at the Scugog Arena. The Eagles had been undefeated in nine playoff games before Friday's 2-1 loss to open the OMHA BB Champi- onship series. The loss puts Port in a tight situation as the final series is only a best of five with game two in Ancaster on March 21' Friday's game was an enter- taining, close contest, with the visitors capitalizingon an Eagle giveaway late in the game for the winning goal. Like the Ea- gles, the Ancaster team appar- ently swept their first two oppo- nents, but both teams were quick to adjust to a higher level of play. Despite some good chances, the first period was scoreless. Early in the second, Port ran into a double minor penalty. Strong penalty killing kept An- caster off the board for almost three minutes before a point man broke free in the slot to re- ceive a perfect pass from the corner. Rick Hutchinson was given no chance on the play. Brad MacArthur got that one back about four minutes later. After some good pressure by the Eagles, MacArthur fanned on a shot from the line but picked up the loose puck and floated one by Brian Galama in the Ancast- er cage. Just when it looked like the game might go on all night, the visitors stripped the puck at the Port blue line to set up a two man break. Hutchinson made the first save, but couldn't hold off both Ancaster forwards as they notched the winner with 3:02 to play. The Eagles would appear to be capable of winning this se- ries, but it will require a premi- um effort and avoiding needless penalties to defeat this smooth Ancaster team. The return of the vacationing strong forward, Jeff Card, and the suspended slick defenceman, Scott Heas- man, will be a boost as the Ea- gles try to tie the series with a road win next weekend. Game three is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24 at 9 p.m. at Scugog Arena. Be there to support your Eagles in another exciting playoff game.
