{ | "A Fimity Traeiition Yor 127 Years™ Cathy McKay off to Europe By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star It's au revoir for one Scugog Woman as she's off to Europe for two weeks. But it's no holiday. Cathy McKay, along with an Ontario contingent, began a tour of the continent on March 21 as the culmination of an 18- month agricultural-related course. "Members of the Advanced Ag- ricultural Leadership group will be travelling to France, Bel- glum, the Netherlands and Ger- many. Although this will be her sixth trip to Europe, she will be viewing it in a totally different light when she touches down in Paris. This time, it will be a working trip where little time will be spent taking in the sights. For the most part the group will be studying the agri- cultural issues which will affect the European Economic Com- munity (EEC). "This will be completely dif- ferent. I've always gone as a tourist," she said. "It's not a tourist thing. We won't be going to any tourist sites." While in Europe the group will listen to lectures and de- bate a number of topics. These include; the EEC's vision for the future, the impact of the strengthening of the EEC, the changing East-West relations, and environmental policies. The Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program is a two- year program which touches on a broad base of farming issues which seeks to provide the op- portunity for future leaders in all levels of the agri-food system to develop the skills, the knowl- edge, the broad perspective and the positive attitude needed to propel agriculture into the 21st century. The course seeks to train agri- cultural people who can repre- sent the province in their own communities and provide lead- ership for the future. The two-year course consists of 55 days, including nine semi- nars, a two-week North Ameri- can travel seminar and an inter- national experience. Ms. McKay, who has an MSc. in Agriculture and operates Na- ture's Bounty with her husband and son, became interested in the program after reading about it in a farming related magazine. And despite the tough ses- sions throughout the province, she has no regrets applying for the course. "It completely changes your outlook on the world. You learn to look at issues from many dif- ferent sides," she said. "It has "Although we live in Scugog, we're part of a bigger scene and we live in a bigger world." Despite the aim of the course to produce agricultural leaders, she has no immediate goals af- ter completing the course, nor does she have any aspirations for any type of political involve- ment in the future.
