Despite Belleville's sweep of the series our finish as the "Eastern Ontario Finalists" is quite an accomplishment for our squad and for our town. Embarrassed by the previous game's drubbing on their home ice our team came over the boards to give a respectable ac- count of themselves. This they did despite not having their more experienced goalie availa- ble for the game. Darcy Ste- phens unfortunately, was lost for the remainder of the season due to an injury and his team- mates all wish him a speedy re- covery. Thomas Lee played the entire game between the pipes for the Auctions and on numer- ous occasions alertly smothered loose pucks around our crease to keep the game close on the scoreboard. Between the goal lines, the Port players valiantly fought for the puck but had difficulty in penetrating the offensive zone and testing the Belleville goal- ie. All in all our players repre- sented our town in a gentleman- ly fashion and coaches Spence- ly, Parry and Empringham and the team congratulates Belle- ville on their series win. Upcoming action for the team include their home tournament, Saturday, March 27 and the fol- lowing weekend they will be closing out their season with a tournament in Buffalo. See you at the rink on Satur- day to cheer our kids on! Eaglettes in playoff race The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team completed two more games in their playoff schedule this past week with wins against Whitby #2 and Scarborough #2 teams. With only two games left before the league championship game, it looks as though our Eaglettes are headed for a collision course with rival Whitby #1, a team that would dearly love to avenge last year's loss in the fi- nals to our XL'ers, and this year's loss in the finals of the Port Perry tournament. Getting back to the Whitby #2 game, in the first two min- utes, we were up 2-0 on goals by Stacey Cunningham from Sa- rah Verschuuren and Alaina Davis from Katherine Cooke and Alaina Burger. Then, all of a sudden, the Eaglettes stopped skating and you know what that spelled. It gave the Whitby girls a chance to get back in the game with a goal at the 11:57 mark of the first period. Maybe it was the three tournaments in one month and the 16 games the girls played in that time, be- cause they looked tired and could not got together a bal- anced attack. But a win is a win as they managed to squeak by 2-1 with the help of some super goaltending by Jill Pashley. In the Scarborough contest, the XLer's found their scoring touch with a 9-1 victory while playing a more disciplined and better skating game. Putting in a solid effort and being reward- ed with a two goal game were Alaina Burger, Heather Reid, and Rhea Baxter. Rounding out the scoring were Katherine, Jackie Pashley and Leanne Layzell with a goal and two as- sists each. Remembering that assists are just as important as als, our assisters were Nicole irtue with three, and Jill, Jan- na Ostafichuk, Shannon War- riner and Kristen Waller, each with an assist. Sarah stopped all but one shot on net and came up with a couple of dandy saves. Next stop is this Sunday at Scugog Arena against Mark- ham and the girls realize that from here on in, everyone must be at the top of their game giv- ing 110 percent every shift and completely focused on their re- sponsibilities for the competi- tion will be tough and there will be no second chances. Most im- portantly, it will be their confi- dence that will carry them through to victory. Legion Peewee As split pair of games in All-Ontario finals The Peewee Legion A team is off to a great start in their quest for the All-Ontario title as they defeated Ancaster on Saturday afternoon 65-0 in their first en- counter. The story of the game was Luke Carnaghan who handled the goal tending duties and cer- tainly deserved the shutout. Good job Luke. The scoring started at 4:64 of the first when Scott Heffern hit the corner with assists to Daryl McEnaney and Mike Heasman. The first period ended 1-0 but Port took control in the second and added four more. Adam Jones got the first from Scott Jeffrey, then Rob Murphy from Scott Heffern on a power play, Danny Lyons the third from Mike Heasman and Scott Jeffrey and the final from Jason Strickert with Adam Jones and Scott Heffern assisting. The last period was a little different as Port didn't score and Ancaster controlled a large. portion of the time. Luke was called upon several times and stoned them. The return match in Ancaster on Sunday was a little different as the boys did jump into a lead, but fell apart in the third to drop a 6-4 decision. Ancaster opened the scoring in the middle of the first and it was not until there was 4:66 left in the second when Shane Nor- ton was set up by Rob Murphy and Daryl McEnaney to tie it. Two minutes later, Rob scored unassisted to give us the lead, but two minutes later, Ancaster tied it to end the second period. At 13:30 of the third, Rob got his second goal with an assist to Shane and at 9:11 he got his third for the hat trick with the assist going to Scott Jeffrey. At 6:44 the wheels fell off the cart and Ancaster responded three times in four minutes to give them a one goal lead. The goalie was pulled for the extra attacker but Ancaster dropped one in the open net with 23 sec- onds remaining. Kent Johnston handled the goal tending and kept us in there until the dieing moments. Derek Tindall helped out in both games due to injuries and vacations and fit in very well. Thanks Derek. Two practices this week, Tuesday and Thursday at 9 p.m. should sharpen our senses and hopefully the results will be alittle different next Saturday.
