Sota tt Ne a A ET PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 23, 1993 - 3 KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR Thirty firefighters from Scugog Hall #1 along with Uxbridge Fire Department fought a blaze at an Epsom home for more than seven hours late Friday night. Scugog firefighters received the call at 9:58 p.m. and were on the scene until approximately 5:30 a.m. Saturday. The farm home owned by Keith and Faye Ashton was destroyed in the fire with damage es- timated at $200,000. The cause of the fire is still under Investigation. The Ashton's son was asleep upstairs when the blaze broke out, but awoke in time to flee the house and escape injury. One firefighter from Scugog was treated for smoke inhalation at hospital and re- leased. Ambulance officers and Durham Regional Police were also on the scene. Disappointed with region's involvement (From page 1) Ward 1 Councillor Ken Car- ruthers was also disappointed by the region's apparent in- volvement in the decision. He says the councillors have been mislead by the region into thinking they would have more of a planning role. "I can't accept that it's a re- gional responsibility," he said. Despite council being una- ware of the region's involve- ment, it appears the three ma- jor developers in the area have been told who will be calling the shots. And in a meeting last week they have agreed to work with the region is satisfying the requirements. Mrs. Cranmer said a meeting was held last Friday with the three developers to discuss schools, storm water manage- ment, a district plan and green space. "They have all agreed to co- operate with the region," she said. It appears the three develop- ers -- Ribcor, Perryview and Vanedward -- will have to work very closely with the region. The 260 units are far less than the total number which they are re- questing. "They are aware that some, negotiations must go on," Mrs. Cranmer said. In an unprecedented move, the region has also attached a timeframe clause to the alloca- tions to prevent developers from stalling on development in the area. Despite the controversy sur- rounding the allocation of the ELVIS STAMPS \_ has been SEEN : FRAMER'S GALLERY 237 QUEEN ST. 985-2543 units, Mayor Howard Hall said he was confident that Scugog would play a bigger role in the decision than first proposed. He vowed to fight regional council on that issue. "I think we will get to choose by the end of'it," he said. "It's their job to tell us how much, but our job to say specifi- shire Arms | Pub & Restaurant Roger & Eileen Chetwyn are pleased to announce that The Derbyshire Arms will be opening on Saturday, March 27th.
