"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 23, 1993 - 7 Letters to the editor Wants board to teach abstinence To the Editor: If Ms. Farr was totally honest in last week's Board of Ed re- sponse she would have indicat- ed that not all parents were happy with the Lake Vista Pres- entation on sexuality. In fact one mother, morally outraged, withdrew her son and called the Family Action Council to stage the picket in protest of obscene material, made available by Public Health. (Parents work and can't always make social events - like pickets). If the Con- dom Fair was so "well received" then why did the board order the removal of the very porno- graphic pamphlet we were pro- testing -- three days after the picket! As parents we find it very dif- ficult dealing with bureaucracy that insists on communicating in half-truths. Parents wanting abstinence teaching as a com- pulsory, separate unit of study has been very well articulated to the board yet trustees like Louise Farr insist on muddying the waters of understanding. So once again we will say as par- ents, we want an abstinence program - a course designed for each grade level beginning in Grade 5 and continuing throughout high school, a pro- gram separate from spermi- cides, condoms and other birth control devices. Lumping abstinence into a - A "Prime Ministress?" To the Editor: Since women are increasing- ly being accepted into govern- ment positions formerly occu- pied only by men, pertinent terms now being used will likely change accordingly. In the en- tertainment industry, for exam- ple, people are called actors and actresses. Therefore, a woman in the post of prime minister may be called "prime mini- stress." In street language that would soon degenerate into "prime mistress." On the provincial level, a fe- male premier may be called a "preemstress," pronounced "princess" in the eastern prov- inces, but "priestess" in Brutish Calumny. 'nuffsaid. Yours truly, Warren T. McCready Cut French Immersion: writer From Page 6 More money is spent on edu- cation than anything else. It's time we got value for our tax dollars. French Immersion with its $33 million budget is where trustees should be looking for major cuts. Anglophones who learn French seldom get the jobs -- they usually go to franco- phones. Bill 8 Ontario's French lan- age law, has already cost us 400 million. Erik Neilson, former PC Dep- uty Prime Minister, told the House of Commons in 1986 that "regulations and absurd laws regarding official bilingualism occupy some 35,000 bureau- crats and cost the nation some $30 billion annually." That's enough to cover the deficit! It's costing taxpayers $43 bil- lion a year in interest payments on the federal debt. So far in debt that the G7 nations are considering dumping Canada because of our huge debt. A debt that in relation to.the U.S. debt is on a per capita basis from two to seven times greater. Spain's economy has sur- passed that of Canada. The combined federal and provincial debts according to the C.D. Howe Institute stand at $650 billion. Ottawa's debt alone is $457 billion. Without fiscal responsibility in the education field we are doomed to failure as a nation. We can no longer afford the luxury of French Immersion, es- pecially in view of Quebec's uni- lingual position. None are so blind as those that will not see reality. Enough is enough! Sincerely, Dean J. Kelly Condom lair is ludicrous and does nothing to impart values of chastity the only healthy choice for children in a world of AIDS. Mixed messages and double standards don't work with kids or has she been a par- ent for 18 years and not noticed. You can't go left and right at the same time. Concerned Parents of Durham Region are request- ing the board teach abstinence as a lifestyle not as a contracep- tive option! As a contraceptive option a girl could find herself in the back seat of her boyfriend's car saying, "let me see now, what contraceptive should I use? Should I use abstinence, con- doms, spermicide...?" Taught as a lifestyle the girl would not find herself on a dark road in the back seat of any guy's car be- cause the abstinence program has taught her how to avoid vol- atile situations. We have the program let's use it. Most par- ents as indicated by the Minis- try of Health do not want their children sexually active yet our board seems determined to con- domize our children. Just last month Grade 7 and 8 students were bused in from feeder schools to Dunbarton High to be taught through a drama presentation that con- doms were their right! The scene: A typical drug store with a young teen examining the dif- ferent brands; His Pleasure, Her Pleasure, Ribbed, Fruit Flavored, Chocolate... After making his selection, he takes his purchase to the sales clerk and jumping up on the counter - shouts to his 12 and 13-year-old audience, "condoms are my right!" What kind of a message was communicated to these young children? (Any 12-year-old knows you don't need condoms to play hockey, baseball or downhill ski). The toxic mes- sage that spewed from this dra- ma was, that "promiscuous sex is his right! What has been obvi- ously overlooked here is the child's "right." His "right" to be left comfortable with absti- nence has once again been vio- lated by the very body of people that claim to have his best inter- est at heart; yes, even to be an extension of his home. Is this the message parents would give Turnto Page 8 ss ORT PERRY auto glass & trum id. ei with p chase.
