IIE 3 i % y Lt I ---- OPTRA » "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 30, 1993-9 MPP Mills says we will all suffer from provincial budget 1 By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Everybody is going to feel the effects of this year's provincial budget, says Durham East's MPP "It's going to be a real eye- opener for all of us," Gord Mills told the Port Perry Star on Sat- urday. } Mr. Mills says the economy of Ontario is faring far worse than anybody had expected and in fact many were anticipating a turnaround by now. But Mr. Mills says the econo- my has not improved as quickly as anticipated. He says "reve- nues are persistently low" caused by a fall in corporate tax- es. As a result of this fall in reve- nue, as well as the continuing rise in the provincial deficit, - some drastic measures will have to be taken. "The situation we're in is * worse than we ever thought we'd bein," he said. "I suspect the budget will be very difficult," he said. "It will be the first time that people will realize we're in a financial bind in Ontario." Because of this financial crunch the government will have difficult decisions to make, he said. Although he says he is no privy to any information perti- nent to the budget, Mr. Mills says there will be "a tightening of programs and people will have to do with less." . He says many people will be upset by the program cutbacks, but 'says there is really no c Ills says "non-effective programs" and grants to munic- ipalities will be considered. "There will be a great knash- ing of teeth." He also says there must be a re-evaluation of welfare. Mr. E Mills says too many people have become dependent on welfare and expect social assistance programs. Approximately one million people are on social assistance at the present time. He says three per cent are misusing it. "We must come to grips with welfare payments where there's 80 much misuse." Although no government likes cutting programs, Mr. Mills says there is no alterna- tive other than raising taxes. But he does not anticipate any tax increases, as the public has reached the limit. "I don't foresee any tax in- creases because it would be counter-productive to what { we're trying to do," he said. Mr. Mills doubts there will be massive jobs cuts. Recent media reports have said that as much as 18,000 jobs in the public sec- tor would be cut. "It doesn't make sense to put people out of work," he said. Instead of putting people out of work, Mr. Mills says a climate must be developed to get people back to work. This includes re- storing the confidence in the consumers of Ontario. Despite the tough times, Mr. Mills is confident that good times are just around the cor- ner. "I'm quite confident before our term of office is over there will be a real turnaround."
