Eagles come up short in All-Ontario championship The Precision Construction Eagles' hopes for a third consec- utive O Midget BB cham- pionship were dashed this week by a pair of losses to a powerful Ancaster squad. Trailing the series 1-0 after a tough 2-1 loss at home, the Ea- gles travelled to Ancaster for Game 2 badly in need of a win to stay in contention in the five game series. Led by sparkplug No. 17, Tim Biehler, the home team opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period and added another Just 11 seconds into the second. Port counted their marker less than a minute later when Steve Desautels picked off a breakout pass inside the Ancaster line and moved in to rip a shot into the top corner. With a minute to play in the second, Scott Heasman won the battle for control of a bouncing puck and started out of his own end. Heasman slipped the puck off to Jeremy Norton, who alert- ly returned it immediately and Heasman continued coast to coast to cap a brilliant rush by deking Brian Galama a la Bob- by Orr and put the Eagles back In contention. In spite of the life given by Heasman, Ancaster pressed on and scored a killer goal with four seconds left in the period to re-open the two goal lead. Five minutes into the third, they added another, then clinched a 6-2 win with an empty-netter as coach Doug Scott pulled out the stops late in the game. Rick Hutchinson was strong in defeat, as the faster, aggres- sive home club generated quali- ty scoring chances. Wednesday night at the Scu- gog Arena, the Eagles were down to their last gasp and re- sponded with a good start, tak- ing their first lead of the series. Norton deflected a Jason Phil- lips point shot by Galama at 7:12 of the first and visions of a comeback flickered. This An- caster team would not co- operate, and as they had done before, they exhibited a killer instinct with goals at bad times. In this case, it was.a pair of markers in the final minute. In 43 seconds Port went from 1-0 leaders to 2-1 trailers and in es- sence the game was over. Although the Eagles contin- ued to work hard, the visitors played a very cautious, disci- plined game and added a goal in each of the last two periods to emerge 4-1 winners and a 3-0 series sweep. Mike Tripp de- fended the Port cage and was outstanding, turning aside sev- eral labelled drives. Both teams should be compli- mented on the final series which was hotly contested, and physical, but clean and free from distractions, either on the ice or in the stands. The 1992-93 Eagles have eve- ry reason to be proud of the 29- 15-8 record they put together on their way to the OMHA final. Much of the success is directly related to the influence of coach- ing staff of Doug Scott, Larry Pilkey, Dave Bourgeois, and Wendy Bourgeois - thanks for an enjoyable season. Our Pearce Auction Novice Rep team and the Port Perry Minor Hockey Association played hosts to seven other towns on March 27 in a day long tournament. Teams from Wex- ford, Innisfil, Orangeville, Ux- bridge, Port Hope, Bradford and Stouffville visited our town and the tournament was sup- ported by "MoJacks", "Dixie- Lee Chicken", and "Pineridge S ". The tournament went 0 rfectly and most games were decided by just one goal. The consolation final was won by Wexford over Uxbridge in double overtime while Port Hope edged out Orangeville in overtime in the Championship Final. The Legion Peewee A team took for Ancaster Satur- day rnoon, under magnifi- cent blue skies, glowing sun- shine and a feeling that with the budding of spring flowers and trees would come the bud- ding of goals and a win over An- caster. . But it seems that a cold snap . must have set in, which termi- nated all growth and left the team in a dormant state. A 4-0 confutation was the yarn of the day -and contrary to last Sun- day's game when the wheels fell off the cart, it appears the wheels were never put back in and the cart failed to actuate. Ancaster got auspicious late in the first period on a goal that skulked into the corner, but two power play goals gave them the titanic jump they needed to overpower our boys. Luke Carnoghan handled the goaltending and couldn't be faulted, as he made a lot of gre- Weisflock and Mike Milligan and also by Mike LeFort from Dane Gray and Dean Van- Camp. Defencemep Scott Dun- can and Gera Timmers helped protect goalie Thomas Lee against numerous Ux- bridge forays into our zone. Jeff Tarbotton and Matt Skerratt patrolled their wing positions conscientously throughout the garious saves to at least keep us parsimonious. However Sunday was a heter- ogeneous game even though the results were not what we had hoped for. End to end play, good hard checking and frenzied saves by both goal tenders was the report. Kent Johnston gave 100 per- cent plus and did everything but score a goal himself, as he- kept the game to a one goal di- versity. It was a stupendous game and despite the 1-0 loss, it was a fine ending to what has been a resplendent year. The boys gave it everything they had and the coaches pulled out all the stops, but it was to no avail as Ancaster seemed to be able to out-power us. Congratulations boys and thank you for an exciting year. A pat on the back and accolades to the administrative body of Turnto Page 36 - Pearce Auction Novice lose in overtime contest.
