"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" Jd ~~ ~ . [EI LI PORT PERRY STAR ¢ ') v2, ' "+3 Set' RL, LP - Tuesday, March 30, 1993 - 35 Scala squeaks by Big V 4-3 in Peewee action Peewee House League playoff action on Wednesday March 24 had Scala playing host to the Big V squad. Coming into this game each team had one win and using a round robin format a win here for either team would almost assure a trip to the final. With this in mind it was Sca- la that seemed the more deter- mined team as they dominated the game in the early going. Starting things off for Scala was Jon Chambers poking in a Tra- vis Pickard shot giving his team a 1-0lead. Then at the midway point of the first period Scala again scored as Tom Baker found a loose puck in the crease and tipped it home for a 2-0 lead. Assisting on the play was Jonathan Froats. Still in the first period it was Ashley Van Shelven headmanning the puck to Jay Fletcher who made a nice rush down the right wing and caught Big V goalie Doug Short deep in his net and beat him with a shot to the far side giving his team a 3-0 lead at the end of one period of play. In the second period Big V started to play with a little more desire and it was soon re- warded as Mark Sauter got his team on the board with Brad The league playoffs came to a close for the Pineridge Tweens on Sunday as they were defeat- ed by Whitby 6-2. Only the top two teams play for the championship and Whit- by and Pickering are clearly the top two teams. The Port Perry girls finished their season in third place and in the playoffs as well. The Whitby goalie played very well stopping all but two Port Perry shots. Amanda Whitby Auto Wreckers vs Lions Club These two teams have played fast, clean and exciting games all year and this one was no ex- ception. The first period ended with the Auto Wreckers up one to nothing, the goal scored by Jamie Page, assisted by Ryan Fraser. Second period ended with the Auto Wreckers ahead three nothing with one goal scored by Cam Vernest, assisted by Beau Jolicoeur. The third goal scored by Jon Sanders assisted by Ja- son Redman and Reid McTag- gart. The third period saw the Li- ons Club score the first goal by Ryan Haslam, assisted by Ken Ellis and Jeremy Hall. The Auto Wreckers answered with three more goals scored by Beau Monsma and Jamie Sauter as- sisting on the play. With the score now 3-1 Ashley VanShel- ven gave Scala back their three goal lead as he scored unassist- 'ed to make it 4-1. Big V just would not roll over for Scala on this day but kept on plugging away and were soon back in the game as Scott Harper tucked the puck into the net with Lisa Bonser assisting on the play to make it a 4-2 game at the mid- way point. From here on it was wide open hockey with lots of end to end action and excellent goaltending at both ends by Scala's Tom Keeble and Big V's Doug Short. With time running out in the game Big V pulled their goalie for the extra attacker and it paid off as Scott Sanderson found the net from Brad Mon- sma to make it a 4-3 score. With their goalie still off in favour of the extra attacker Big V made a valiant effort but were to be de- nied as they ran out of time and Scala hung on to take a 4-3 win. Playing a strong game for Scala were defencemen Ryan Williamson and Adam Brain while Alex Wordley and Eric Beiers had strong outings for BigV. Tweens eliminated Wakeford scored both our goals with assists from Pam Hiltz and Lee Anne Wakeford. The Regionals begin Easter Weekend where we have nine teams competing for the Tween B Championship. We will need our best effort from every player if we want to bring home a medal. There will be three Port Perry teams competing, so come out and cheer them on as we close out our season. Good luck girls. Wreckers win 6-1 Jolicoeur, assisted by Cam Vernest and Eric Bird. Ryan Fraser unassisted and the third goal by Reid McTaggart, assist- ed by Jon Sanders, ending the game 6-1 for Whitby Auto Wreckers. Auto Wreckers would like to acknowledge the fine defensive playing by Alex McLaughlin, Jeff Danitko, Jason Redman and Rob Seehan along with the excellent goal tending of Cary Cleydert. Both teams would like to acknowledge the fine offi- ciating. The Lions Club would like to recognize the fine defensive play of Darren Royal, Ryan Ke- hoe, Ashley Murphy and Jere- my Hall. See you at Saturday's final game. MACKEY, BAILEY & KORB BARRISTERS & SOLICITORS Saturday Mornings - 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Oshawa Rd., Port Perry Lake Scugog Lumber Buildin * 985-7391 A local figure skater had her dream realized when she received an hour of instruction from world champion skater Barbara Under- hill. Faith Scholfield, a member of the Port Perry Figure Skating Club, was thrilled to meet heridol who won the world championship in pairs skating with partner Paul Martini in 1984. The hour of instruction was purchased by Faith's mother Su- san at the Community Memorial Hospital's foundation fundraiser "An Evening in Paris" which was held in February, 1992. \ Although Mrs. Scholfield tould not attend the fundraiser, she gaveinstructions on how high she was willing to bid on the service. "Doug Farndale bid on it for me," Mrs. Scholfield told the Star, adding that the bidding went as high as her limit. She did not tell her daughter about being the highest bidder until Faith's birthday in April. Due to being pregnant with twins and her commitments to CBC TV, whom she works for as a figure skating commentator, Ms. Underhill was unable to fit the hour of instruction into her time- table until Monday, March 22, Just after returning from a two- week stay in Prague where she was covering the 1993 World Championships. But for Faith, the wait was well worth it. "She'll never forget this day," her mother said. JULIA DEMPSEY/PORT PERRY STAR Lots to do as Port Perry Minor Softball gears up As our deadline for softball registration draws near, the ex- ecutive of Port'Perry and Dis- trict Minor Softball has become extremely active. As most of you are aware, the Ontario Amateur Softball Asso- ciation has put forth a motion to change age groups in all age cat- egories, to align with those of Softball Canada. This change, however, will be voted on this upcoming weekend at the O.A.S.A. convention held in Markham. Port Perry will be ND well represented by Dave Kay, Wayne Venning, Dave Dalton, and our O.A.S.A. convenor, Car- olyn Best. At this time, Port Perry Mi- nor Softball has chosen to keep our house league age groups the same as in previous years. Reg- istration this year to date, has not been any surprise, however, we do hope that all of you Youth Lob Ball players will get your registration forms to any of the following prior to Friday of this week, Dave Kay, Allyne Jones, John Dawson, or deliver them to Pineridge Sports. As well as those players be- tween the ages of 5-19, we are still looking for volunteers who would like to assist in any way possible. This assistance could come in the way of aiding with pictures, to sponsorship of one of our house league teams or a rep team sweater. For more information, please contact Dave Kay at 985-8689, or Allyne Jones at 985-9860. Jim -------- pee ate ORT PERRY 985-8507 auto glass trim, | "Tn - _ Expires March 31/93.
