"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 30, 1993 - 3 SCOPE to continue its fight against engineering school By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star environmental group will continue to fight the develop- ment of an engineering school in og. David Tasker, a member of SCOPE, told the Port Perry Star on Friday that his group in- tends to push ahead with plans to block the construction of a training school for heavy ma- chinery operators. * Last week council voted in fa- vor of an official plan amend- ment allowing the Operating Engineers Trainipg Institute of Ontario to set up shop in the Marsh Hill area. The school is proposing to build a training facility which features a 125,000-square foot administration building, shop building and machinery storage area. An outdoor training area is also planned. The proposed site is in the Marsh Hill area on the 12th Concession, near regional Road 23 on a 140-acre site of an old gravel pit. SCOPE has fought the pro- posed site for more than two years claiming it will be harm- ful to both the environment as well as residents in the area. "Our concerns are dust and noise primarily," Mr. Tasker told Scugog council recently. Members of SCOPE argue the Donations needed for Spring Food Drive "Giving is Receiving" is the theme of Operation Scugog's Spring Food Drive begining April 8. The food bank, which currently services between 20-25 fam- ilies per week, is in need of a variety of foods. Soups, stews, beans, meat, fish, peanut butter, powdered milk, Kraft Din- ner, rice and cereal are all needed. i With high unemployment rates continuing and the long wait for the insurance to begin, coupled with high rent and mortgage in the area, the bank is becoming more heavily relied on, said Anne Wanninkhof, of Social Services. Food donations can be made at Port Perry IGA and Dow- son's Valu-mart in the drop boxes provided at the front of the stores. Donations can also be dropped off at the Port Perry Fire Hall engineering school will produce excessive noise and dust, as well as prove to be envhonpenialy harmful to a nearby mars land. The group had called on re- gional and municipal officials to delay a decision until all rele- vant tests concerning the pro- Ject are available. "We had hoped, and were led to believe, that Durham Region would hold the vote until all in- formation was available," he said. : Mr. Tasker says there are a lot of questions that still need to be addressed before a decision should be made. Mr. Tasker says it is neces- sary to wait because some of the earlier tests were either flawed or incomplete. He points to the fact that no emphasis has been placed on the effect that noise would have on an adjacent marshland. He believes an earlier study should have explored the effect. He also says no dust studies have been conducted. "We feel very strongly about the protection of the area and theenvironment." Mr. Tasker maintains that if their concerns were considered and addressed the group would have accepted the decision. But he says this was not done. v---- Sponsor a Scout SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Pine Ridge District Scouts will be planting trees In the area on May 1 as part of Trees for Canada. This year it Is expected that 30,000 Canadian Scouts will plant more than two million trees, with 6,000 of these planted In the Durham Region.
