Mr. Ball's steamboat Ex- press was intended to tow lum- ber from a portable sawmill to his farm in Caesarea, as well as for recreation. Soon though, the Express was making stops all around Scugog. She ran a week- ly market trip to Lindsay for farmers. In 1895 he built a sec- ond boat, the Comet, which be- gan a regular service from Cae- sarea to Lindsay starting every spring as soon as the ice broke up, bringing farmers and their produce to town and taking oth- ers on fishing trips and boating excursions around Scugog. Captain Bowerman pur- chased the Express and used it for both towing and passenger trips. Years later hé built a larg- er boatin 1902, named the Cora. The year 1904 marked the end of an era as Commodore Crandell passed away. Tatley writes Crandell had seen and helped Port Perry become what it is, seen the town of Lindsay grow to a thriving municipality and created the village of Stur- geon Point. He built or pur- chased 11 steamboats and had fought to uphold and expand commerce on the river to im- prove navigation and to build a tourist area. Three years after his death the steamboating industry he had helped create was also meetingits demise. _ In 1907, the Cora and the tug Stranger were the only two steamers on the lake. Soon after the fleet of steamboats in Scu- gog was ending as the Stranger, the last of the Crandell fleet caught fire, ending its 30 years of service to the area. The sole surviving steam ves- sel on the lake was the Cora, COMPLETE WEDDING ~ PACKAGE ORDERS THE PORT PERRY STAR OFFICE CENTRE 188 Mary Street, Port Perry 985-7383 Fax 985-3708 purchased by the Carnegie Mill- ing Company. It spent its re- aining days as a tug, until it ore out and was dragged ashore. Sixty-five years after it had began, steamboating on Lake Scugog was over. No real traces of the once prosperous industry can be seen on Lake Scugog today. Even the stone pier which ran about two hundred feet out onto the lake on an angle from the railway station is gone. The pier which saw the crossing of countless amounts of freight sunk into the lake and disappeared. The only trace of its existence is it can still be located with a pole. The days of industry and shipping are gone, but the recre- ational aspect of the lake sur- vives. The lake no longer de- cides the livelihood of a loggin industry, but still decides the livelihood of a tourist industry, as anew breed of boaters use the lake for recreation and sport. | 5S passenger, maroon finish, air, 11,000km- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 13, 1993-13 It's always worth the trip to...
