Emmerson Insurance is the local sponsor of the Canada Safety Council's Home Safe Home contest that will award mountain bikes to 12 young art- ists for their illustrations of safety in and around the home. The contest is open to chil- dren in grades one through six who enter by submitting their drawing before the deadline of April 30. Winning entries will be selected to illustrate the 1994 Home Safe Home calen- dar, sponsored by Wellington Insurance on behalf of the Can- ada Safety Council. : To make sure Scugog Town- ship children can benefit from the chance to learn about home safety and win a bike in the pro- cess, Emmerson Insurance is making entries available to teachers and parents in the Scu- gog area. "For parents and teachers, the Home Safe Home contest is an excellent opportunity to dis- cuss with children the hazards SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Bl Home Safe Home found in every home," says Lar- ry Emmerson. "Together, they can talk about the dangers of fires, falls, electricity and strangers at the door. Children feel more confident when they know how to prevent accidents and parents can then rest a lit- tle easier." Mr. Emmerson cites a study by the Canadian Institute of ild Health showing that one in every 100 children will be ad- mitted to the hospital this year suffering from the results of a fire, fall, drowning, poisoning, - pedestrian or bicycle accident. Accidents in and around the home account for more than half of all fatalities among school aged children. "Most, if not all, of these accidents are preventable, with information and education for parents and children," Emmerson adds.
