sp apr i gs EE y A 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 13, 1993 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Campbell tests political waters in Oshawa By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Twenty-five years to the day that Trudeaumania swept the country, a new mania rolled into Oshawa, with much the same hype and promise of renewal. National Defence Minister and political leadership hopeful Kim Campbell was in Oshawa on April 6 to appeal to both the party faithful and the fence sit- rs. And it took Ms. Campbell no time at all to seek the support of the labor movement who have become disgruntled with the New Democratic Party. "I think it's very important for us as Conservatives to reach out not just to people we think of as our traditional supporters but to people in the labor movement and say it's time for a new poli- tics," she told the crowd. "It's time for us to work together as Canadians to address the prob- lems that are before us." Much of Ms. Campbell's speech focused on "political in- clusion." The cabinet minister argued it was time to include all "Canadians from all walks of life" in the political process. "I think we have a remarka- ble opportunity not just to choose a new leader for a party, not just to work towards win- ning the next election, but to de- fine a new politics. A politics of inclusion, a politics that in- cludes people all the time and not just during an election," she said. But Ms. Campbell says politi- cal parties, including the one she represents, have been guilty of ignoring the people in the past and negligent in com- municating the messages to them. "I think all governments communicate poorly," she said Quality Jeans, Shoes, Jewellery, Suits, Slacks & Blouses F Clip out this ad and recieve New & Pre-owned Ladies Wea 20% OFF your next purchase! while stressing the need to in- clude all Canadians in the polit- ical process. : And with the policy of inclu- sion involved, Ms. Campbell used the meeting to introduce, albeit vaquely, her ideas of tack- ling the important issues in Canada including the deficit and the national debt. "I think Canadians now un- derstand very clearly that the deficit and the accumulating national debt are one of the most important challenges that face us." Ms. Campbell said it was time for Canadians to realize the need to tackle the problems and reduce the deficit. The only way to do this, she said, was to re- duce spending and stimulate revenues through prosperity. "I don't believe tax increases are the way to reduce the deficit anymore. We need to address the question of prosperity," she said. "How can we try to bring revenues to government needed to get out of debt without adding to the tax burdens of Canadi- ans." The answer lies in addressing the question of prosperity, she said. This includes investing in the opportunities for children and youth, employment oppor- tunities for adults, ensuring a fair trading field for the coun- try, preserving the safety net and health system and keeping our communities safe. "We must do all these things while still maintaining fiscal re- straint." : Deborah Maple 50 mm (2-1/2") 89.25 NOW reg. $127.50 cal. W.B. Buy yourself an INSTANT TREE Hurry Sale ends May 15, 1993. It's not a fetish for the bottom line. It's a concern for the human reality and human unhappiness and the lost oppor- tunities for Canadian men, \ 'created when 'women and children that are vernments are irresponsible about the debt." Ms. Campbell's "foray" into Oshawa was part of a brief swing through Ontario on her leadership campaign tour. She also made stops in Markham and Toronto.
