XL Eaglettes win the gold at Novice Championships = The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Eaglettes are now the 1993 Central Region Major Novice C Ringette champions thanks to an exciting and thrilling 5-4 vic- tory on Sunday, April 11 at Om- emee against their season long rivals, Whitby No. 1, and last week at Iroquois Arena, they won their second consecutive 401 league championship in an- other barnburner overtime 6-5 win against you know who, Whitby No. 1. The 1992-93 season for the Eaglettes has been a very enjoy- able and rewarding campaign and these twin championship victories are the icing on the cake. The league championship game was a real see-saw battle with the Whitby girls with the team scoring last the winner. Port opened the scoring at 5:58 on a great flip shot by Leanne Layzell. With the score 1-1, Ni- cole Virtue used her hard wrist shot that bounced over the goal- ie to put the XL'ers up 2-1 with only 28 seconds left in the first period. Shannon Warriner picked up the assist on the play. But Whitby tied it up 2-2 with only one second left on the clock. In the second period, Janna Ostafichuk set up Leanne at the 22 second mark to go ahead 3-2. Port went ahead 4-2 at the 6:07 mark on a nice passing play from Sarah Verschuuren to Sta- cey Cunningham. But Whitby just wouldn't give up and tied the game with two goals in the last five minutes to force the ame into overtime. The first five minutes was not sudden death and that saved the day for the gas crew because Whitby went ahead 6-4 at the 48 second mark. Coach Virtue used a time-out to help rally his troops and the move paid off as Katherine Cooke set up Stacey at 1:27 for the equalizer. The go head and winning goal came at 1:59 with Leanne passing to Ni- cole and she again used her strong wrist shot to score her biggest goal of the season and secure the title. but Whitby tried desperately to tie it in the last two minutes and Jill Pash- ley had to come up big and make several key saves to keep the ring out and as time ran out, the entire team rushed out onto the ice and mobbed Jill in celebra- tion. It was a great and entertain- ing game to watch and both teams played like champions, but the drama and rivalry car- ried on into the regional cham- pionships as Port and Whitby squared off in the second game of the round robin tournament. It was another close-checking and hard fought battle that end- ed in a tie 4-4. The goals for the XL'ers came from Katherine, Stacey, Nicole and Sarah and Jill again kicked out the shots from all angles. In the second game, in order to claim top spot and home team advantage in the regional final, the Port girls had to beat the host team, Ome- mee, by at least seven goals and not allow any goals against. With the determination of a Ninja, the girls rose to the occa- gion and skated away with a 14- 0 win. The scoring was spread out with hat tricks to Sarah and Leanne. Scoring a pair was Rhea Baxter with singles to Alaina Davis, Alaina Burger, Nicole, Stacey, Jackie Pashley, and Katherine. Both Heather Reid and Janna played super on defense and were rewarded with an assist each, as did Kris- ten Waller who was out there digging on every shift. Jill played another solid backsto and was rewarded with a muc needed shutout. - The final show-down against Whitby No. 1 was a real nailbit- ter and nervous contest and tip- ical of the games between these two teams all year. Rhea opened the scoring at 4:47 and Sarah made it 2-0 for the Ea- glettes at 5:24 with the assist to Rhea. Whitby snuck one in but - Leanne set up Stacey in the clear to make it 3-1. But Whitby closed the gap to 3-2 with only 21 seconds in the first. They tied it at 4:22 but 14 seconds later Sarah passed over to Alaina Davis and she scored her most important goal of the year with her patented flip shot into the right top corner. A min- ute later, again Whitby snuck in there for the equalizer. But at 9:26, Nicole fed a perfect pass to Alaina Burger and she became an instant hero (heroine) with a quick shot past the Whitby goal- ie. The Eaglettes held off the Whitby attack and had to play two players short in the last minute due to penalities, and Jill stood fast and kicked out several shots that were labelled for goals. The Whitby goalie also played an outstanding game and a super effort from both teams. This victory is definitely the highlight of the season and it oxomplifies the hard work and dedication that all the girls put out every time on the ice. The coaching staff salutes the players for an outstanding sea- son. Coach Virtue would also like to thank assistant coach Steve Cunningham, trainer Heather Davis, and manager Turnto Page 30 at the Youth National Swim April 10and 11. medal. deadline. Woody's defeats Monsma in three games to win first broomball championship After letting Monsma take the first game of the league playoff finals, Woody's came back to win the final two in com- manding fashion. Last week they blanked the opposition 4-0 and this past Sunday salted it away with another shutout while netting three. The final game saw the first period close with no scoring by either team. Each had a power- play with Monsma unable to put anything together with theirs and Woody's were given numerous chances during their advantage. The best opportuni- ty in the first half came from a two on one break for Monsma with the Atwoods being thwart- ed by goaltender Rick Lees. Early in the second Woody's began to pour some pressure on in the Monsma end only to be stopped on several good chances by Jim Raaphorst. With the nu- merous faceoffs in the Monsma end it was only a matter of time before it would pay off for Woody's. This happened on both of the first two goals as Tom Powell won the draw on each and passed it back to his int men for the. shots on net. he first came from the broom of Bruce Woodrow with Charlie Dennis picking up the second marker. Powell was also in on the final goal as he relayed a pass to Jim Gregg whose shot was stopped by Raaphorst only to see Jayne Tate flip in the re- bound. Woody's tried to add to the lead in the dying moments as they were stopped from in closeona3on 1. The Annual Banquet will be held at the Oddfellows Hall on the 24th of this month as a wrap up to this season.
