He pointed to the fact that im- ports have risen to $58.7 million since the first Free Trade Agree- ment. Mr. Shepherd argues that un- der the new free trade agree- ment, Mexican workers will work at a cheaper rate putting more Canadian jobs in Jeopardy and causing the unemployment ranks to swell. - "As we sit here tonight, the Conservative government in Ottawa continues the charade of a leadership debate, while distracting us from the real fact that they are ramming this agreement through the House of Commons and down our throats." But Mr. Shepherd vowed to get even with the politicians, providing them with a taste of their own medicine as well. "We are going to put one more person on the unemployment lines, one more person who no longer fits with our changing economy, one more person who can't see the vision of a new to- morrow and this person is the Conservative representative for Durham," he vowed. "We are going to send the To- ries a message. And that mes- sage is this: enough is enough, it's time for you to go." Mr. Shepherd also took the opportunity to attack the pro- life faction of the party which "are committed to a single is- sue." "They serve to cloak them- selves in the respectability of the Liberal Party while stran- gling our democratic tradi- tions." The federal Durham riding elected a slate of executives with a pro-life slate during a re- cent executive meeting. Mr. Shepherd called on the members of the Liberal Party to unite in the overthrow of these people. "For every one of you in this room tonight, we must rise up out of these seats and say no to these people," he said. "No we won't let you trample over our rights which other have fought so hard to defend. Rise up and help your federal party in this great time of need. You must get involved. The cost of failure is too high." ' Glenn Malcolm, the middl speaker of the evening also came out swinging at the feder- al Tory party but instead of dwelling on the problems, called on the country to come up with solutions. . "I cannot stand by any longer and allow the Tories to disman- tle our country with misdirected policies and incompetent man- agement. The last eight years of Tory rule has undermined Can- ada's very foundations," he said. Mr. Malcolm, who stands for a country from sea to sea, says Canadians must decide the fu- ture of the country and what di- rection it should take. "The focus in these times must not only be on the prob- lems but on where we want to go as a nation and which party has the ability to achieve this. I be- lieve it is only the Liberal par- ty." Believing that a politician should represent the people, Mr. Malcolm pledged to be ac- cessible and accountable. "Democratic leaders should be in the process of gathering public opinion when deciding policy and direction. Most im- portantly they should hear the citizens' Voice and decide how to best achieve the wishes of the society they represent," he said. Mr. Malcolm promised to be a voice for the Durham Riding and represent the riding in Ot- tawa, "The people of Durham come firstin representation. While the other candidates used the Progressive Conserva- tives as a whipping board, Dave Robinson choose to concentrate on his strengths and leadership Jolifies while pointing out the ory'sweaknesses. Mr. Robinson, who served as national president of the Kins- men Clubs of Canada, was re- sponsible for the successful Proud to be Canadian tour which travelled across the coun- try to commemorate the coun- try's 125th birthday. "For the past eight years, the PCs have been putting people out of work, Ross Stevenson has been a part of this for the past five," he said. "While Ross Ste- venson was putting people out * work, I was working for Cana- a." Mr. Robinson says Canadians are looking for leadership and competent people to run the country, he feels he is the right candidate. "This is a time to recognize Durham Riding needs proven leadership more than ever be- fore. It is also a time for realiza- tion that remarkable strengths will be needed to bring forth ° such efforts," he said. Mr. Robinson pointed to his involvement as president of the Kinsmen Club and his organiz- ing of the Proud to be Canadian tour as prove of his leadership abilities. "I believe that I possess these necessary attributes to serve our riding at the federal level," he said. "As a volunteer in a ser- vice organization for the past 12 years in the Durham Riding, I have continually demonstrated J Now, for a limited time, when you open a new chequing or savings account with $500 or more at the Laurentian Bank you will receive a free movie video*. In perhaps the boldest move of the campaign, Mr. Robinson has pledged to represent the constit- uency in a way like no other poli- tician has. In the boldest attack on Mr. Stevensen's track record, Mr. Robinson declared "Durham needs more than a backbench- er." He argued that Durham is one of the largest ridings in Can- ada, but at the present time has no representation in cabinet. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. Mr. Robinson promised to re- sign from politics after the first term if he was not given a cabi- net position. "Durham deserves more than abackbencher," he repeated. Appealing directly to the par- ty members, Mr. Robinson told them that they must have confi- dence who they choose. "Elect the best person to serve Durham Region," he said.
