"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 20, 1993 - 11. Letter to the editor Marsh Hill is in danger To the Editor: Marsh Hill In Danger. As a citizen of Marsh Hill for all my life I was saddened to see that Scugog council is still pushing for the locating of the Operating Engineers School in Marsh Hill, the area located in the northwest corner of Scugog Township. It is the most impor- tant natural resource area of the township and that is the source of pure water. The rea- son being it is one of the few re- maining class no. 1 wetlands of Ontario. : Let's not gamble with our fu- ture or our children's future for the sake of tax dollars or a few jobs. The wetlands are a price- less possession. Let's keep it that way. As for tax revenue and spin off, it will be minimal because being an educational facility the tax rate will be subsidized and all spin off benefits will go to Uxbridge as it is only min- utes away. Another important fact of life is that once the balance of na- ture is upset no amount of mon- ey will repair it, so let's not kid Chamber of Commerce to hold draw The Scugog Chamber of Com- merce will hold its annual So- cial and Elimination Draw Din- ner at Stables at Greystone Restaurant on Friday, May 28. The atmosphere of this yéar's event will give local residents and business people a chance to meet and socialize more freely than at previous events. Tickets for the social are $26 per person. The evening begins at 7:30 p.m. with the elimination draw taking place at 8:30 p.m. More than $4,600 will be giv- en away in the draw. Only 100 tickets are available at $100 each. Twenty cash prizes will be awarded including 15 prizes of $150, and one $200, $300, $400, $500, and $1,000 prize. For more information or to purchase tickets, please call Brenda Casteels at 985- 4427. ORT PERRY auto glass &* trim wd. ourselves. A lot of people that will be af- fected moved to this area be- cause they like it, let's keep it that way, i.e. peaceful, quiet, beautiful and one of Nature's Masterpieces. Now, you the council see fit to change all of this. We the people of this area pay a lot of taxes compared to the services we get, i.e. no garbage pick up, higher hydro rates, less fire protection, less police protection, no recrea- tion facilities within five to 10 miles. We are prepared to pay high- er taxes for the high quality of life in this area. If you see fit to lower the quality of life then also be prepared to lower our taxes. Keith Bacon, A lifetime resident of Marsh Hill JUST FOR THE RECORD Official dates since 1872 the ice left Lake Scugog While spring officially arrived three weeks ago, many area residents don't consider winter's over until the ice dis- appears from Lake Scugog. This year, Scugog's ice finally disappeared from the southwest arm of the lake on Sunday, April 18, just four days later than last year, and the latest date recorded in the past 11 years. So, if you're a record keeper, mark down Sunday, April 18, 1993 as the official day the ice left Lake Scugog. The last time the ice left departed on this date was in 1950. £7 OUR April26 1927...
